Woodhill bombing range

Hey there,

me and my mate are really keen for a ride this sunday.
have heard of heaps of guys going past woodhill and going to the bombing range.
is anyone keen to meet us and show us how to get there.
or can anyone please give me directions??

really to make a good go of it you will need a support vehicle, to carry fuel, food and drink, as well as tools

I normally go from the bike park, ride, along the beach, pay to take a mate and extra fuel , may be keen another day am busy this weekend, also watch out for the red flag, unless you want your arse shot or blown up.

The bombing range it right at the end of the beach - can't miss it. I can't remember how many k's but it's quite a lot (30 - 40?). If you want to have a good run when you get there you MUST take extra gas with you. Failing that, there is another way to get there and that is via South Head. When you get to the end of SH, park and ride your bikes back and turn right at the first road. at about 200 metres, start looking for a small track to the right. Presto.

Remember to be really careful on the dunes as a few riders have been killed hitting someone coming the other way.

Take a tediously boring ride miles and miles north up the beach from the bike park (or even further from the muriwai entrance), helps pass the time if you practice your wheelies, rolling burnouts etc but makes the trip take even longer. I personally dont think its worth the effort or wasted gas! The sand dunes simply dont compare with the likes of Kimmys/Thundercross etc, only thing it has going for it is that its close to Auckland. I agree that you must watch your gas, take extra or have a support vehicle and WATCH OUT FOR ONCOMING BIKES! The amount of times I would nail it up a sand dune planning to get air and then back off out of fear of a head on was huge...

Plus, I dont appreciate the extra wear and tear induced by the sand on the bike.

Watch out for the tides, when we were coming back from the bombing range there were parts of the beach where the surf was lapping up against the dunes! I wouldnt want to have to ride all the way back from the range on the dunes, would take forever!

Just my 2c worth, not my idea of a good ride but hey, it might be right up your alley!

what i was wondering is to get is close as possible by car and trailer, then ride in from there. I have been there before from the beach with extra gas.

but have heard many of guys actually driving straight there.
just want to know exact dirrections as its along way to get lost.

any one keen for a ride this sunday out that way???

Another option is to go in from Rimmers road, there is beach access from there, but it is still 30 km from there one way. Still that is 30km of fun.

Pick a day / time so you ride the beach at low tide, way more fun!
