Hi all,
After turning off and filling up the NC30 at the petrol station today, the bike wouldnt start up again. The starter motor is working, but the engine does not turn over - or react to the choke being on or off. I have tried bump starting several times with help from a tow rope, but still no response. All other electrics work fine. Ended up having to be towed back home
For the last year there hasnt been a single problem with the motor starting, it always pops into life straight away. I have a feeling that the CDI may have died, as it has happened before on this bike ( and also the problem and symptoms are exactly the same).
Anybody have any ideas on what may be the problem?
And does anybody have a spare CDI lying around? (just in case)
I found with my broken vt 250 with that cdi i think reason no lights come on even with battery hooked up might be wrong , chould be a coil failure,
also with it not turning over sounds more mechanical, wonder if starter is jamed my vfr had this
When i changed the clutch plates as stuck washer in wrong side the starter gear ,
Try taking your starter right out and push starting it , but i check engine isnt seized first
Not at the prices im being offered for replacement CDI's!
Cheers for the help actungbaby but due to time restraints iv ended up biting the bullet an sending the NC30 to Hamilton Honda for a proper diagnosis and a thorough check up, to make sure everythings in shape before i put her up for sale.
Should get a ring tomorrow with the results, hopefully it wont break the bank!
It turns out the CDI had burnt out![]()
Could some electrical fault or problem with the reg/rec be frying my CDI's? I asked the shop but they didnt look into it. Two CDIs in one and a half years doesnt seem like a coincidence. The shop has got a used one ready to install for $300......... Sure no ones got a cheaper one to spare?![]()
jump on http://400greybike.co.uk/ and ask. If you still have the original reg/rec I would suggest replacing that anyway as it will go eventually.
Theres a NC30 CDI on trademe for $80

Some advice please. I have an NC35 and have just cleaned out the carbs. The plugs indicate she is running rich (feels it too), and the pilot screw was turned out 2 turns, as opposed to the standard 1 5/8 turns out (as per Haynes). When I removed the piston in the carbs, my Haynes manual indicates that there should have been a washer which was not there. My NC35 has a carbon exhaust and no de-restrictor washers in the carb's. The sub-air element was also toast which I am replacing - and according to Haynes this can cause the bike to run rich. Should I reset the pilot screw back to two turns out or try the 1 5/8 setting, bearing in mind the lack of washer in the piston (and this was missing in all four carb's), given that the sub-air element was toast, and the bike running rich? I'm pretty sure the jets are all standard. Thanks
