What's the story with the "Lahar Police" then?

I rode the 'bird up from just north of Wellington this morning to Tokoroa. 400 km and the first HWP car I saw was on the Foxton straights. Next one was just south of Waiouru then 4 on the Desert Road!! Doesn't look like numbers have been reduced at all following the lahar. The conditions were diabloical, driving rain and stuff-all visibility and the HWP weren't using "instant on", just got the microwave running full time which was nice for detection purposes!

The Highway Patrol who were allegedly put on the Desert Road in large numbers ready to shut SH1 when the lahar let go. Looks like they're still there.

Of course. It's a fine hunting ground for the $grabbers.
Do you realise how many holes there could be if people would just take the time to take the dirt out of them?

instant on is no good when it's raining as it can take too long to get a ground (patrol car) speed, which is needed before a target speed can be aquired

Yep. After another series of eruptions rebuilt the ash wall and 10 years pass to refill the crater lake

the road between national park and wangas is shit. i was up there a month ago, and every few k theres a sign with washout and reduced to one lane, rocks all over the road, and one long patch of works using stones the size of a thumb. not much fun. i didnt get above 70 the whole way up! in this weather, i imagine itd be worse.
got a friend coming down from auckland... he called me at 1, said he left at lunchtime, and he isnt here yet. last call was 2.20pm... im guessing ohakune [he said hed call from there] so im getting a little bit worried.

the really happy person is one who can enjoy the scenery when on a detour.
