It is surprising how many people know the difference between a "biker" and a "bikie", especially among those who are a little longer in the tooth.

Maybe you just work with fuckwits.
Hahaha - biker and bikie - what is the difference?

In the UK Blue Angels, Hells Angels etc = Biker Gangs.
Bikie or Bikey means having the attributes of a bike "That reliant robin is a bit bikey...not enough wheels to be car-y" no, seriously, bikey is not a word in the UK.

What's the score here (I'm from a country where a guy that's "hard case" will slash your throat) I need another kiwi language lesson.

A biker rides motorbikes and is an enthusiast.
A bikie rides motorbikes and is a gang member.

Well, that's how I understand it anyway

yep... thats how i see it too. a member of the ontario provincial police [or pricks, depending who you are...] said about 2 weeks ago that all bikers are criminals. needless to say, quite a few took offence to that...

only instance ive had was some old duck at work. i arrived at work, parked and then walked over to my coworker. still had all my gear on [jacket, gloves, lid etc] the oldie said, "its a wonder theres nothing on your back" or something to that effect. think i scared her a bit when i said "women arent allowed, but...." and just left it there.
incidentally, i do have a bandanna pinned to the back of one jacket, that to the untrained eye, could be mistaken for something else. its on my vest that has memorial patches on it. the 'danna reads "brother in the wind" with an indian and motorbike in the middle.

Get it all the time. The trickis to use it to your advantage.

Cars move out of my way where they prove a bit more trouble to the local sportsbikers.

Ahh, yep. Any time I wear my BLS vest to a concert. See this thread for more details.

Reasons Why? Well probably just comes down to a mental association of gang dudes with Harley/cruiser riders means anyone vaguely fitting that mould is stereotyped as a gang rider.

It's strange that when I wear my sleeveless denim jacket, filled with music patches (Yes I still love the 80's) and pin badges I get much more respect on the road, but when I'm simply wearing my leather jacket no one gives a toss, so I basically wear my music colours all the time now!!

If someone accuses you of being in a gang, you tell them you are in a gang and if they are not careful you and a bunch of heavies will come round, kick over their postbox, blow chunks into their herbacious border and fuck their wife. It's just good fun to say things like that and then watch their reaction.

The best response I have used is to say "yeah, what's your point?" and stare menacingly.... then laugh and walk away.

"If you can't laugh at yourself, you're just not paying attention!"

That sort of thing doesn't work when they are emailing those comments to someone else.

I've had it several times, mind you, I'm a bit of a ragamuffin and my bike is often bug splattered and oil stained. It's all about perception I suppose; the public mind sees a grubby biker on a Harley as a gang member or gang associate. If you've been on the road for a week or ten days, carrying minimal gear, you probably look as though you're on some drug-running mish as a prospect. It wasn't so long ago I was asked by police "what are your gang associations?" I responded with "do you mean my speeding tickets?" but that went down like a lead balloon.

When I first got involved with motorcycles the 'go' was to have a set of 'originals' (I still have them), the grubbier the better. All the gang members had them too but I wasn't trying to emulate the gang culture, more the big finger to those who wore suits, the corporate types and the 'straights'. perhaps there's still a tinge of that old rebel in me and I'll never wear a tie. I have a small rebel flag sewn onto my jacket if that says anything.

Right or wrong you won't catch me in anything but jeans and a T-shirt and I ride in the same thing, just a leather jacket on top, fingerless gloves, shades, a neckwarmer pulled up over my nose (when it's chilly or wet) and usually an open-face helmet. It's been that way for decades. No moisturiser either!

Its not what you say Mack, its your facial hair and the forearms like tree trunks that do it.

.....and yet most of those commuters probably wear leather behind closed doors.
