Seems we might have caught up at last in New Zealand regarding Microdot Vehicle and parts identity. The article may be about cars but it's equally valid regarding bikes even though it begs the question why is it just for new imports?

In the UK "Datatag" kits have been offered to all purchasers of new bikes and were available to buy for any machine. Can we not get them here? Presumeably not. The microdots are suspended in an invisible gel which is coated discreetly about the machine. In addition, you etch an irremoveable code onto all the plastic parts of the bike. You also inject a transponder into the seat foam, and you glue half a dozen similar transponders into a hidden location such as the wheel rims and frame. Your bike details together with the transponder codes are logged and stored on a central database. The police hold special equipment that detect the transponders and can then identify the rightful owner of any machine or its parts. Theoretically it helps to combat theft and the resale of parts from stolen bikes.

Oh... and you get a pretty sticker to hopefully ward off the thieving scumbags and deter them from nicking your pride and joy. I've already made a dummy one for the Ceebie and the cages in the household.

I was just talking to the ex-GM of the dept I work for and he's involved withan RFID startup firm importing Datatag stuff to NZ. Aprroximately six months to market.

yes you can them here (diff brand prehaps), (we have them in stock) and Star Insurance will do $0 excess on theft if you have them fitted,

the kits start from $125 for the moped kit, and $199 for the Motorcycle Kit

Hi Ho Jim, datadots similar to those described are available thru either selected dealers or www.recordit.net.nz. As also stated before, Star Insurance DO actually have a $0 excess for theft if the boike is sprayed with these beasties.

how do you find where the dots are? Surely somone will have to check for them when they find a stolen bike or part. But if somone can find them, cant the thief find them?

They are tiny....microscopic blobs of gel with millions of "dots" in them. In addition, I seem to recall that the dots are only visible under infra red light. What determined opportunist thief is going to carry one of them around?

The thief could very easily find the etched codes on any plastic parts but he would have a considerable job to disguise and repaint the parts if he chose to rub down the etching.

As for hidden transponders in foam seats or inside wheel hubs or petrol tanks...I'd defy anyone to get em out!

how do you go about getting them "installed"? and what about when the vehicle gets sold/wrecked?
sounds like a damn good idea... something id be keen on, thats for sure.

my partner used those metal stamp things and numbered every single part on his panhead with it. lol.

Hey guys, I just had a quick word to the guys at Star Insurance and they tell me that they only recommend and approve one firm for DataDots - www.recordit.net.nz - and will waive your theft excess ONLY if these particular DataDots are fitted.
