What do you reckon about burning oil?

Old bikes burn oil, thats a fact. Some burn heaps, some burn a little. But when do you think burning oil gets to the point that its just TOO MUCH?

When it needs topping up every 2000km? 200km? every ride? When it goes off the dip stick every 300km?

    Whats your opinion?

    Cheers.

Personally I love it, to me it says that all is well and alive in there... nothing like clearing the pipes onto the mobile object behind me.

Whats the problem? GB using a bit?

I put 500mls plus in each 500kms on the CX. GB uses a wee bit, say 200mls each 1000kms. Which I understand is not uncommon if they are trashed like mine is HTH

In 12,000km I added just over a litre to my '89 GSX-F600. Only had 42,000km on it when I sold it though, too.

Used semi-synthetic and didn't particularly ride it sedately.

my 86 gpz doesnt use oil at all, it leaks a VERY tiny amount (havnt noticed the level drop but i get a drop of oil every night) but thats coz im too poor to afford those gasket things.
Then I could get a Kb Tshirt, move to Timaru and become a full time crossdressing faggot

You are checking the oil tank after you've run the engine for a few minutes?

Well i just went out then and turned the bike on and ran it for a while and running for a few moments doesnt change the oil level, i find i usually have to go for a ride, get home, let the engine idle a while, then check it...

That's fine. Letting it fast idle for a few minutes should do the job too. Gives the pump time to scavange the oil from the sump to the tank.

How much oil are you going through?.

Well i cant give you an exact amount, but since i changed to mineral last saturday, i have ridden about 350km and it has probably gone down around a 3rd of the dip stick...

Is there any weeping around the top of the engine? Rocker cover, head area, or decompression lever seal maybe.

Nope, i gave the engine a really good clean so i could see if there were any leaks, none at all. The only dirt on the engine is around the chain area. I checked the oil before after i had run the engine for 3 minutes or so and it was hardly on the dip stick, i took it for a ride and got it warmed up ( went about 8km ) and came home just onw, checked the oil, and its near full ( where it was when i checked it this morning after a ride. So i think taking it for a ride gives me a much more precise oil level. But in saying that, i still have to top it up every now and then...
