    Thread hijack beware!!!

    Guys,

Have any of you removed your standard steering damper ??

Or should I ask, Have any of you still got your standard on ??

I was just advised by Haldanes to remove it and the difference is amazing. It feels like a 250cc.
I know the implications of not running with a damper ... but ...

    Thoughts ?? Suggestions ??

If I could afford a hyperpro or Ohlins, believe me, it would be on there!!
    Not even with yours!!!

Gee,how can i put this politely... Whoever told you to run your TLR without a steering damper is a "RETARD" ...... if you find the stock item a little restrictive the oil can be changed out for a lighter viscosity (2.5W maybe) it is on TLPlanet.com somewhere if you do a search ..... i went to an aftermarket one.. fwiw ...... the TLS can be a little more twitchy than the TLR,but running no damper will come round and bite you on the arse in the long run,if you simply commute up and down the motorway you might get away without one....if the suspension is set up,sag etc it should steer fine, but at the end of the day it is not a 250.

Glen that is an old pic...things have got a little out of hand since then with more and more mods, nearly all are time consuming and to a certain degree it appears not tried before so there is a bit of figuring out still and am in no hurry to finish it...there is something to be said for stock with a set of cans,a lot less drama in the end.

Seems to be a fair bit of knowledge on the TL"s out here, so here's my question: Have any of you had coolent leak from the right hand side of the bike, there is a small hole in the side of the engine casing (the hole looks like it is supposed to be there) that occasionally leaks green coolant. Is this just an overflow? Bike is never low, of too full for that matter, of coolent, so i pretty much ignore it.

I am far from any kind of TL expert.......but fwiw.... the hole in the outer cover is a passage that goes up to the area betwwen the inner oil seal (primary drive side) and the waterpump's mechanical seal.....the idea being if either was to start leaking it would be noticeable by weeping from the telltale hole.....

    Hi Daryl

    What TLDV8 said

The seal may not be happy and needs attention.

    Do a search on tlplanet.com

Heres what we did,We took the standard steering damper apart & with a small file we filed some small grooves on the edge of the plunger(the plunger only has a small hole in it for fluid to pass through).
We did it a little at a time,Then put it back together & tried it until we got it spot on.
It has made a huge difference & the damper still does its job & is so much easier to throw around.
The internals of my damper are actually from death.incs GSXR,He took his off & we experimented with it.

After seeing this shot of the Bitubo damper I think I'll be replacing mine. You could not pay me enough money to ride the TLS without a damper. I know it's saved my arse a few times on the track.

The TLR doesn't suffer from the same issues as the TLS in this reguards but like TLDV8 said, it's not a 250. The change to a 2.5wt oil might be the best option for you.

    Thank for your responses guys,

I know the TL's's are a little more prone to getting slap happy, but I'll still be keeping my eye out for an aftermarket jobbie.

Sooooo.. If you guys hear about a second hand steering damper up for sale, please let me know.

While wer're on the subject, It's time for me to replace my Chain and sprockets.... Any suggestions ?? I was thinking about going up a couple of teeth in the rear .. Have you guys tried this??
    Not even with yours!!!

Changing the oil in the damper makes quite a difference, I removed the damper from my TL1000S, (SAUL has all the instructions), pulled out the plug and then slowly replace the oil with 2.5w using a syringe, and a lot of patience, transformed the bikes low speed stability, gives one a little more confidence in its handling.

Ok, I need to have a lend (or buy cheaply) of one over the next week or so.

My dad is very sick and I need to get down to Nelson and spend some time with him

Does anyone need a reconditioned radiator for a TLS? I've got a spare one away being reconditioned at the moment. I'm not 100% sure of the cost to me at this stage but I will probably need to get around $300 for it. They are about $800 new.

Kerry at Motohaus does good deals on chains and sprockets, is it a 17 or 16 front on the R, reckon going one down on the front is easier than the rear, plus a front sprocket is a shitload cheaper and if you want to go back to standard your chain length wont be as far out as if you changed the rear sprocket.
I went down as low as a 15 on the front and things got a little crazy i have a 16 on now and thats great.

Just bear in mind the greater the gearing change, the faster the speedo reads, i had 295kph on my clock with the 15T on, proberly only doing 245-250kph.

You can get a "Yellow Box" but they aint cheap and i'd rather buy a rear tyre instead.
GSXR wiping the shit that is that Honda, Yamaha and Kawasaki off the road since '85'
