    40-year-old vehicle

Land transport say - one their website - that the rego fees don't apply to vehicles over 40. Does this mean the fees are zero, or are there other fees? I think it is written for cars, and wonder if it applies to bikes. What do you think?

Do all vehicles have to be licensed continuously?

All motor vehicles must be continuously licensed while using the road, except for the following:
vehicles that are not required by law to be registered or licensed
vehicles that are more than 40 years old
agricultural machinery, tractors and mobile machines
exempt class EA and EB vehicles
trailers and trailer-type caravans having a gross laden weight not exceeding 3,500 kilograms
    all-terrain vehicles (ATVs).

But it is not mentioned on the exemptions page:

So, is over 40 a good thing?

I think the section refers to Continuous Licensing, where a vehicle's rego has to be paid regardless if it's used or not.

This means that if you forget to re-register it in March and you go in May to pay your rego, you will still need to pay for March and April, ie, from when it expired.

It doesn't appear to mean they are exempt from having to be registered.

My '36 Morris 8 is well over 40 yrs old & I only pay $85 per year to rego it & it doesnt have to be continuosly regoed either! YAY!! one way to almost beat the system!
Im certain this also aplies to old bikes, my '71 CB450 will be cheap to rego in 2011 & my '72 Guzzi Eldorado in 2012.... DOUBLE YAY!!

Yep a mate of mine just had his BSA turn 40 and his rego is now $75 I think, he is very pleased.

I think its assumed that a 40 year old vehicle isn't on the road as much, so paying a little less makes sense.

No, the govt. wants your $$. The reason is probably that three are just not many 40 year old vehicles around.
