    woot

I hope we'll find some cliffs, I'll have a new bike to drop off one next week. The F650GS is sold and I have a line on a shiny new DRZ-400E to break in

we'll be expecting you to be punching that new machine along dene - they've a strong reputation as a great perfomer.

Watch some of those corners though - unlike the Makairo the distance down to the Whanganui river from some of the bluffs we expect you'll be sliding around with your foot down (a la Speedway) is a long way and the river deep in parts

    Hey Dene
Go the mighty DRZ. Great fun in the gravel, but you get a hell of a sore arse on the long sealed stuff.
My recommendation is to gear it up as far as you can. I'm going to set mine up to go a lot quicker this trip, so it won't be revving like hell on the open road.

    Cheers,
    Bart

Actually, to be honest, the DR650 is probably the better bike if you're going to be doing a lot of road riding. The 400 comes into it's own offroad, but the 650 is a much better package on road. Rubber engine mounts and handle bar weights may not seem like much, but after a few hours on the road you certainly notice it.

    dr650

Yeha, I thought about the 650.. but I'm more after a small bike for hoonery around the countrysides rather than touring. If i stick around new zealand, i'll probably pick up something else for the roadwork. the stock drz400 is 14/47 right ? Haven't actually ridden it yet, so not sure how the gearing is..

I was running 15/47 last ride. I'm looking at 15/39 this time. Should pull 180ish.

15 tooth front takes some mods though. The guard thingy doesn't quite fit.

Anyway, standard gearing is cool offroad, but will rattle out your fillings doing 110 on the seal.

First ride and the bike got dirty

Wife and I went for our first proper ride on the KTM yesterday, up to Mokau for a coffee then on way back went up the Uruti valley to see what the bike was like on gravel with a pillion. Not bad at all. Bit different to trail riding my DRZ400 where it is accelerate hard then brake hard etc etc.

Wife very much enjoyed the ride, gravel didnt phase her. Hope to get the bike run in before the wwwww!

It is a 05 model, so still has some of the warranty left
Seems to be in good nick,

I rode it back from Palmy last night (and by the time we finished fluffing around) it was dark and cold
It went really well on the road, I did enjoy it

Welcome to the 2nd Adventure Assault – Whangamomona

DAY 1 – 280km approx (from Wanganui to Whangamomona)

The plan is to meet in Wanganui, then follow the Whanganui River Road through Jerusalem, Pipiriki and on to National Park and Taurmaranui via Raetehi.
We will meet up with any Northern Riders in Taumarunui.

    Then it’s onto Whangamomona
Accommodation is at the Whangamomona Hotel – Cost is $95pp and includes Dinner, Bed and Cooked or continental breakfast.
The Whangamomona Hotel is the most remote country hotel in New Zealand on State Highway 43 - Forgotten World Highway, between Stratford and Taumarunui.
Beautiful rugged countryside, spectacular scenery and it is rich in history.
There are 11 rooms and the hotel can sleep 22 in total, so please contact the Hotel to confirm your room. First in first served.
    Phone (06) 7625823

There is a camping ground just down the road for those that elect not to stay at the hotel.
Please contact Whangamomona Village Motor Camp on (06) 762-5822.

    DAY 2 – 310km approx

We start the day by heading south then turn off at Matau down Junction Rd, out to Urenui, then into Okoki, Kaka Rd, Uruti Rd, Moki Rd, Kiwi Rd, back out to Highway 3, Awakino, riding through a few tunnels along the way.
Then for those that are keen we could complete a 60km round, side trip to Waikawau beach, then we head back towards Piopio on Taumatamaire Rd, and then back down Ohura Rd to Ohura, before heading our separate ways.

If you are interested in this trip, please register your interest, here on the KB calendar
The meeting times and distances may change so regularly check this post for any changes.

    Cheers
    Scott
    Hi Scott,
I'm pretty keen on this ride, but without consulting some large scale maps, have only a vague idea of where this goes ( being from the south island and all that, so any chance of putting some squiggles on a map with a vague route to get some idea of where this goes ( Or anyone else who knows the area and could do this is also welcome to post a map )

I know it's 760km for me to get to Wanganui for the start, but not sure where 1/2 the other places are

    Thanks in advance, Stu
