From Taumarunui, via Whangamomona to the Coast?
Cheeky bugger that HP2 tyro GarryW aka KiwiGSer - Pete I think you'll find that the Dakar and the 1150GS have a similar range. When I last did this ride - Whanga via the tunnels we rode from Stratford and out via Kiwi Rd - via Mt Damper I just had sufficient range to reach the first petrol on the coast North of New Plymouth. I'd recommend a small Jerry Can if you've got room like Garry has said he'll be bringing. Cheers all - Aslan![]()

I hope the weather is better on this trip than it is here at the moment![]()
It is cold and wet and it has been snowing in the ranges, I actually thought if the sun was shining today I was going to venture up the Kawekas to see how my snow riding skills are

Dusty Butt 1000km - We knocked the bugger off what next?
Always optomistic but end of June/early July Taranki? It's going to be cold and probably quite wet. Heading up that way next weekend with the Lost Boys (couple coming down from up North) for an overnight at Awakino. Those of us from down here will probably do the western side of the Whanganui River out round Paparangi then head toward Whanga from Stratford and round Mt Damper to the coast. Will let you know how that goes. Looking forward to the 30th![]()
just a question...think i went there yrs ago. we rode some quads from a place called Ureti..or something.....think we ended up at wanga.....there was some neat back country..steeeep.....is this possable..or have i got the wrong place.
The Whanga road goes inland from Whanga and not towards Uruti.
It has been fixed up recently, two of the bridges have been replaced. The local school organises a trail ride each year which goes down the Whanga road at the start and finishes 100km later at the Whanga Pub (an awesome ride).
Some of you with the smaller bikes might want to go down there for a look, there are some mud holes where the 4WDs have been stuck, one, or two, tunnels etc
Got to remember though that it is legally 2 way and that a 4WD or horse etc could be coming the other way on the corners.
scott,if you follow the red line on map you can come out at start of matemateonga walkway, then follow road out to makahu, and come out at strathmore(s.h43).i used to hunt and tramp that area years ago,we'd go in at makahu and walk around the area, apparently now you can drive to start of walkway, and go to bridge to somewhere which crosses whanga river and then out the way your looking at by 4wd.we did part of the road when it was track by bike years ago,in good weather it's great, there is shearers courters at aotuhia, even road to wanganui river can be ridden, you could spend a weekend at whanga using pub as base camp as an alternative, cheers tony.

Best way to see the area is to go there in Feb when the school organises the trail ride. It is 100km, you do down the Whanga road, over Bridge to Somewhere then up into private farms, out near Kohuratahi, then cross the "Highway" (so now on the West of it) and head up quite high and come out just South of Whanga.
They stop all the bikes at the pub to get your number to make sure that no one has gone over an edge.... Unlike most trail rides where you sit by the car and trailer making up stories, at this ride you load up as quick as you can then drive to the pub and while having a drink watch all the other bikes and quads coming down the road.
After doing the ride you can then decide where you want to go further

mind you when i went out that way we had 3 on 2 bikes, with packs for tramp to wanganui river and back,i was pillion for while and my pack on back, the rider had his pack on the tank,we didn't travel quick but was fun,i had stint on own with dt175 and managed to slip down a slight bank about 2-3 mtrs, got shit for it for years.
