I just had 3 days in Laos riding a KLX250 and seem to have been bitten by the adventure bug...

I was looking at the WR250R posted above but stumbled on the Husky.

I can't find any information online about the Husq WR 250. Would be using it for everything tarmac/gravel/trail.
I know a couple of people who swear by Huskys for durability / reliability off road. I doubt you would want to spend to long in the saddle, though.

The clutch cover looks decidedly "rubbed" considering the original tires look like new.

I ride a CRM 250R on trails and occasionally on tarmac and it's hilarious. I suspect the Husky would be a bit more hard core.

IIRC one of these came up for sale new in the last year or so and it was $7995. Something smelled a bit fishy about the whole deal and I was skint but it appealed at the time.

    Test ride.

Yep, ride a wider range of gear. Not that a 250 2t trail/enduro machine is wrong, or even inappropriate for 'vencher riding, but it's at the "difficult terrain" end of the spectrum, and won't do well on the road for long.

Those KLX250s are probably a bit closer to a reasonable compromise if your touring includes some flat stuff. Good bike in fact, several countries select them for military use. The bigger brother KLX400 is probably better if your day includes more luggage than a handbag, and they're in fact a Suzuki/Kwakka joint venture, with Suzuki's version being the DRZ400. Both fairly robust, with the only common complaint being the (only) 5 speed box.

I like to pretend e-start is for pansies, but in reality I wouldn't buy anything without nowadays.

A more substantial rear subframe is another thing that defines a 'vencher machine from a normal dirt bike.

But again, try a bunch of different stuff, off road if possible, you'll probably change your mind six times but you'll be far more likely to end up with something you enjoy if it actually does what you want it to do without too much drama.

I did 3 days 2 up on the rental. No idea what the speed limit is in Laos but 99% of the time you are doing well under 80. I did find a nice big straight piece of road and when we both ducked down I hit 101 on the speedo

Pretty much set on a WR250R. Haven't ridden a 400 but they don't float my boat at this stage.

    Don't go there.
Terrible adventure bike, the gearing will drive you mad. Italian WR's don't have the wide ratio gearbox but the close ratio mx box. That looks to be a 2010 model which had the problematic ducati ignition not the dependable kokusan.
If you must go 2 stroke look out for a dt230 .

There's a theory that behaving old is the root cause of becoming old.

Well all right, it's my theory. And it might be a bit flimsy.

    But I'm sticking to it.

    Get you're cheque book out.

I've got a 525EXC, and that 300 is faster everywhere, except possibly on gravel.

    .
Haha. I agree. I spent today making pretty patterns in wet clay, trying to get through the rutted bogs at the bottom of hills and generally trying to keep my CRM 250 pointed in more or less the right direction. Nothing old about it, except me and the bike, nothing sensible about it, either. But, what a hoot. And what a learning curve.

    Ning, ning for the win.

Bugger. I have to clean it tomorrow.

It seems me along with a few others have noticed that the bike appears to have had a rough life, sump guard and chain guard missing, fading on the back plastic, serious cosmetic damage to the rims and engine casing and not to mention that exhaust that appears to be hose clamped on with no change to the mapping. I've been keeping my eye open for one of these but won't be going for this one, way too many red flags for me.
