yeah. The GSX just doesn't have the ground clearance of the DL so I knew when I bought it that I'd need a true adventure bike to get my back country fix. Mind you, I did take the DL into some places that tested both bike and rider. (As a certain group who bravely followed me over the Old Dunstan when it was wet clay and snow can testify.)
And whether I end up with a DR650 or a DRZ400, I will still gear it down one or two teeth.![]()

Im using 16/43 for gravel/road and 14/43 for when it gets sticky. 15/43 made me wish i had one of the otherones on?
Half the DB1K and back home from Fairlie to Nelson.
15/43 = 4850rpm at 110kph.
14/43 = 5200rpm at 110kph.
I rode down to the DB with 16/46 (same as 15/43) and it felt too high geared for me.
The first longer ride I did with 14/43 was the NIIOTS and it felt a little revvy on the road but was brilliant off.
Now I've got the mindset of not lugging the engine and keeping it over 3000rpm minimum, I feel a lot happier with more revs.
Max torque is at 5000rpm, max power at 6000rpm.
