Probably my 1955 Triumph Tiger 100 (not bought new I hasten to add). Used as regular transport to varsity, even through snow in harsh UK winters, thrashed unmercifully round the Isle of Man at the 1969 TT on open days, dropped numerous times, including going under a cow (don't ask) and still carried me more or less reliably everywhere for years without getting stranded. Perhaps it's because it was my first "big" bike that I hold it in special affection.
oh cmon now u gotta tell us the story about going under the cow
Don't laugh, it was my RG150! The bike I learned to ride on and the one I rode thoustands of kms on. It was my first bike and I loved it to bits. I would find any excuse to ride it and I was sorry to see it go four years later when I bought the F650CS. The Goose is pretty good though, but the RG - believe it or not - had a more comfortable seat!
Yes, I am pedantic about spelling and grammar so get used to it!
I would have to say my mighty TL1000s...a frickin whoot to ride!! a newborn lamb could wheelie it... never had a bad ride on it...![]()
definatly a ledgendary machine!!
What's all this, "Well I've only owned 2 bikes..." stuff? Hardly a basis for contributing to this thread now, is it?
The bike that gave me the most satisfaction (and was also the crappest bike I've owned, and the most troublesome) was the XBR500RS Mutant (CB250RS frame, XR500 engine). Never quite got the thing running right, but it cost me a total of ~$600, and that was for paint, new plugs, tyres and sundry stuff. Completely dismantled it, repainted it, rejetted it, etc., and made it mine. It had the crappest tyres (what do you expect for what they cost?) and was a pig in a lot of ways, but it just oozed character and was a real wheelie monster.
I "inherited" it when I was 'between bikes', and if I rode it now, I'm sure I would think it was the biggest pile'o'poo on two wheels.
But I had some fun with it, and it filled the gaping void in my life started by reading a book about a guy that bought a Ducati 900 racebike on a whim.
... and that's what I think.
Or summat.
Or maybe not...
Dunno really....![]()
Oh all right!![]()
I was coming home from varsity with mate on the back. Going down a country lane not far from home, 2 cows wandered onto the road from an open gate in a paddock and completely blocked the road. Although I was braking heavily, impact was inevitable as they were too close and I managed to get the bike sliding as a precursor to laying it down. Smacked the cow side-on at about 10 mph and it bloody hurt – felt my shoulder pop out, then pop back in. My mate landed on the cow’s back and fell in a heap on the other side. The bike and I ended up under the cow and I remember praying not to get trampled as there appeared to be hooves everywhere.![]()
After the cows had buggered off at high speed down the road, I found that the crashbars had taken most of the impact and apart from a broken mirror and scratches on the crashbars, the bike was pretty much all right. Was able to ride it home but the left hand side of my body was all the colours of the rainbow a couple of days later and stiff all over. A lucky let-off – cows are pretty solid objects!![]()
I've had a few bikes in my life but the one I love the most and can't stay off and enjoy riding more than any other is my GSX1400.
I just had to knock up 30,000kms in a year and a half on the first K2 I bought
and decided I wanted the latest in black. Only ride it for fun in the weekends and the odd run after work in summer, but I could ride it all day, every day.
They do everything well.
If the destination is more important than the journey you aint a biker.

My Honda CM125 was great. Nice riding position and it never missed a beat. Went everywhere on it and passed my test riding it. I expect I remember it more positively than I should as it was twenty years ago back in the UK.
I guess I would have to say my current (VTR) though I have some really fond memories of my XJ650 Special... oh and my CB250
Really enjoyed my first bike, a Honda CBX250. Rode it everywhere but eventually upgraded to something that could handle long trips better.
KTM 640 Adventure is the recent fave. Highly competent and capable bike, soaks up everything, can be ridden nearly anywhere. Strangely it seems a very 'companionable' bike... just seems to encourage you to ride more, chuck it around some more...
Cheers,
Colin
