How much should used parts cost?

I set up a website http://www.vgcspares.co.nz advertising really good quality secondhand parts for Triumphs and there seem to be split views on prices ranging between 40-50% of new. Some think “cheap” others not.

So here’s a question for you: When a new double seat costs $550, a new fairing panel $990, a footpeg $145 and you can’t buy a new engine – what should secondhand spares cost ?

Used parts are usually half new price,depending on availability.So if they are hard to find then expect to pay more,if they have heaps and they don't move then the price drops.

Supply and demand seems to rule. I worked in a Qld wreckers In the eighties , when a customer grizzled about the cost of a Trumpy cylinder head. The boss grabbed a hammer and smashed it up in front of him
Then told him to f&&k off! lol.

Seems I can sell stuff on trademe at a higher price than people will accept as a fixed price - weird, supply & demand or just everyone has to feel they're getting a bargain ?

Plus people can get excited in an auction situaton and pay more they intended to

50% of new price is in most cases OK. But it depends on supply and demand. And quality. If I can get a decent Triumph Bonnie tank for 1/2 the price of a a new, then I will. Why pay more then you have to? But if the tank needs work and a paint job, then the price is up there with new, and I rather get a new tank.

I sell s/h stuff on TM. Mainly for smaller bikes and scooters. And if I compare my prices to new I charge 20 - 30%. At times 10%.

I went to get some jets etc for a carbi. And they cost me $65. I also bought a s/h carbi at same time for $50. After I had recond the first one with the bits it worked good. But the s/h one worked as well.

You soon get a feel for where the prices should be. And there is nothing that compares to espionage. Contact your opposition and ask for prices. You soon find out where you sit.
