BMW helps nail 105mph V-sign biker

"Bus driver Philip Coffey appeared before the beak at Luton Crown Court earlier this week on 10 counts of dangerous driving after he was tracked by police "with the help of BMW and a national registration database". "

    See: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2007/05/17/v_sign_biker/

Okay, so I imagine BMW only helped the (UK) cops ID the model of BMW, not the rider itself. The headline is a bit sensational.

Man I'd love the NZ police to give the picture of a my GSXR to Suzuki. "Okay, yeah, it's blue and white GSXR. We've sold.. Several of those"

Now the serious question: Do you agree with your bike vendor helping the police with speed camera bullshit?

Agree? Fuck no. That opens up an even bigger can of worms out there. However...time and place...rider's choice eh?
Do you realise how many holes there could be if people would just take the time to take the dirt out of them?

Himself. But that's not my reading of the article at all: as far as I can tell the cops had a picture of the biker from the front, not the back. So they called BMW and asked them what type of bike it was and the names of all the people in Bedfordshire who had one. They got three hits, one of whom had matching leathers and had also pimped his headlights and ... you're nicked, sonny.

Hey, BMW, I buy motorbikes and fuck you.

i would suggest BMW were required to pass this information, after being presented with a seach warrant. i doubt whether the cops would go to the trouble without having some legal power, likewise i doubt BMW would give the info without having been compelled to do so.

If that happened to me I would not only switch rides I'd be skulking in dark alleyways. That sucks big time. A murderer or kiddie fiddler, sure, but a speed camera???? Someone needs a wake up call.

Damn right. I've given up on that speeding lark. Taken to burgling houses instead, it's much safer.

Maybe the fact that they supply the plod with bikes helped them make up their minds to help?

Speed, in and of itself, has never been a sole causative factor in any accident. Something else has to go wrong.

You are a lot safer doing 200km/h on a well maintained vehicle than a beat up old dunga with bald tyres and dodgy brakes.

If the posted speed limit were turned into a safety limit it would be a different limit for everyone depending on the skill of the driver/rider, the condition of the vehicle and the environmental conditions at the time.
