Ratbikes at the classic bike show.

Here are some rats from the Classic bike show in Wellington. Some were in the show and some were outside the show. I especially like the one with the Aluminium sidecar, I see that everywhere around the city.

Brought this old 79 XR250 when it was 10yrs old for $200 just as a fun bike which gave some hilarious results

gave plenty of hours of entertainment and learning before lunching itself

The bike in that photo is FAR too tidy to be a Rat.

remember pictures can glamorise things though considering $200 brought it, for the money it was a minter
it had an XL tank that would weep through rust holes, the side panels were painted black with stove blackener, pretty much zero brakes etc.
I ripped the airbox off it and gutted the exhaust, broke the rear guard pulling wheelies so trimmed it up with a hacksaw

Still got the piston out of it somewhere though it's in an ugly state .
Ended up giving it away to a young fella who was trying to build another one for parts.

It's a RAT. Looks like you gave it a wash once in a while. Makes it a water RAT.

    This is a $40 Rat

A mate brought this off the farmer he worked for for $40, wasn't running, swing arm was slogged, & shitloads of other crap wrong with it.
He gave it to me to get going
He and his brother were wrapped up in the local scouts/rovers outfit and the bike ended up being used by the local scout group and lasted 4yrs of boy scout treatment before it died

I hear he's an interesting chap, mad but brilliant. Has a virtual bike museum under his house or something?
