Himitangi Straits you could do that speed, if there was NO wind and conditions were perfect, your bike was set up well and you were bloody lucky.Originally Posted by Mongoose
In the real world, it's usually blowing on Himitangi Straits, which is muffled somewhat by the trees on the side of the road, which create intermittent wind effects, there are cars everywhere and the road is imperfect.
Incidentally, a quick google tells me the official NZ Land Speed Record for a 2 wheeled vehicle has stood since 2 July 1955, when Russell Wright achieved 185.15 mph in Swannanoa on a Vincent Black Lightning.
Perhaps you could try and officially break the record, The One?
And I to my motorcycle parked like the soul of the junkyard. Restored, a bicycle fleshed with power, and tore off. Up Highway 106 continually drunk on the wind in my mouth. Wringing the handlebar for speed, wild to be wreckage forever.

Don't be one of those huh![]()
And didnt the Britten set some speed records down South Eyre Road as well?
What you fail to mention here are the rules surrounding the measurement of the 'land speed' records....ie measured as an average speed between two markers 1km apart with only 3km run up and run down either side and the second pass needs to be made within 60mins and the average of these two passes are taken. This is a long long long long way from terminal velocityOriginally Posted by celticno6

Seriously, does any know if there is gonna be a speed trial held anywhere in the country??? if not will have to organise a fun 1 for everyone (sort of unofficial, but legal) with ambos, cops and bikers.
So I can do some filming, even strap a cam on some of your guys bikes.

There should be one before Xmas in the Wairarapa. Done on a closed road with timing lights and ambo crew on board. The run-up isn't 3K (due to the shape of the road) but last year someone got up close to 300k.Originally Posted by The One

Most of the people caught via this method have been identified via video footage, because most people who perform this type of stunt just can't not avoid getting their face on camera at some point. It's both an ego and a proof thing.Originally Posted by NC30_chick
If other faces are identified from the tape then they can be asked to finger the person who was riding the bike.

Shouldn't matter if it's done legally as in an organised event. Guess I'll have to get a written premission from the cops and stuff but it should be cool. Can't have a speed run without showing the people riding. Be like having a tennis match with the players blacked out.Originally Posted by Jim2

I'm not knocking it, just letting you know that there are a whole lot of issues to be aware of before you launch into it.
Sweet, might just have to go to the run in Wairarapa. I'll be the guy with all the cameras, (for the vid), so If you want to take your frustration out on me, for my story, please feel free. Prices are $1 for each curse word, $10 a punch (not in the face, as I have to be able to film) $15 for a kick, all money will be going to Starship Hospital. Use of any other object's say around $200. The Southland Motorcyle club used to run a event once a year, the only time we went to it there was to much wind and rain to run it,I don't know whether they still run itOriginally Posted by The One

I think there are still two speed events down this way but doubt either of them qualify for records, apart from local records that is.Originally Posted by Kickaha

I've emailed the Wairarapa guys to see when they're doing the next sprints.
Will post both here and start a new thread when I get a reply.
Last year they held them late September (a shocking day, couldn't start till after lunch cos of the cross-winds, even then they were still bad) and another lot in November - much better weather.

Being frustrated is disagreeable.
But the real disasters in life begin when you get what you want.
Wyndham is the one that we went to,but unfortunately on the day the wind and rain made it to dangerous to run the event,I was told the road we were using was where John Hepburn did his NZ record run on the HayabusaOriginally Posted by Mongoose

We were told If the speed you do exceeds the NZ record you can fill out a whole bunch of paperwork and apply for it to be recognised

I just read the original post - thought it was interesting. Read some of the other posts too - cant really see what your all harping on about to be honest.
These days I tend to not go so fast in public places - guess I am old and slow now, but in my yoof a different matter.
Back at the tail end of the 80s I did a computer project putting those radar cameras they have behind the grills of mufti jam-jars in the uk. They use radar scanning and can take detailed image of plates up to a klick away on a packed motorway. Coppers dont really need to chase speeders now unless they think some crime has been committed or some other such reason. Usually they will just turn up at 8am the next morning and nick you there. Not sure how it works here.
It seems that some of you consider 200kph to be fast. I know kilopoofters uses big numbers, but please - work in mph if you want to talk fast. Then go down bruntingthorpe (in the uk) on bike day and you'll meet up with the 200mph+ boys on their modded road bikes. Drag race during the day, ride the bike home at night. Heck my 250 will do 200kilopoofters if I take the restrictor out.
I too used to ride like a nutter, I have a little story about full throttle drag racing up the M4 (three lanes wide in each direction - dead straight) on my way to work. Used to pick two large 18 wheeler trucks that were side by side and shoot the gap between them - using the vacum of the slipsteam to slingshot the bike out the front (with a bit of luck you'd pass at about 180mph+ - they'd be doing 90mph or so). Odds on you'd get thru with a foot gap either side. Was harder to do it the wet because you couldnt see the gap. Used to shit me silly when I hit the wall at the front of the trucks, then got sucked sideways in front of them (if the bike wasnt trying to lift itself off the ground). If I got to work, i'd be covered in that icy cold sweat you get from pure fear.
I never used to be like that, but after a year or two of flinging a bike around traffic as fast as you could 12 hours per day 6 days per week in one of the worlds most busiest cities (london courier), stuff like that was the only way you could relieve the bordom of riding bikes - with cagers doing their best to make sure you werent riding them.
Thing is, now having seen the results of a few people that got it wrong - one or two fellow couriers, and getting a few years longer in the tooth, I break out in a really bad cold sweat when I even think about doing stuff like that - and its now 15 years after the fact too.
So having said that I have done all that silly stuff, I do now regret it, and thats why I am a grumpy old sod when I see the yunguns of today doing it. For some reason seeing people splatterd tends to upset me more than it used to. Especially the innocent ones that were on the receiving end.
Anyhow, if you think you are fast, or a good rider or got away with things - just realise there are people that are faster, better who do it for a living. Took me a while to realise that. There are also the people who didnt get away with it - just that once - and wont ever have a chance to try again.
I do just wish people 'd take it down the track these days. Public roads are for puttering around - enjoying the sun and watchin the chicks
Just my thoughts![]()

lol.. you could try turning your lights on.
I could understand if it was a dark twisty unlit road or something - but then you probably wouldnt be goin quick anyhow. But 130mph aint exactly fast now is it - these days. Its only a quick twist of the throttle over standard pommie motorway speed, or the tall end of 3rd gear on a cbr 6.
Still, considering your only sposed to be doing 60mph, doing double that is rather daft day or night - but people do it I guess.
200km/hr = 55.6metres/s at that speed it will take you probably a minimum of 6 seconds to stop. or 200 metres ata good guess. if a car going the other direction chose to overtake thinking there was enough room and unable to properly judge the speed of oncoming bikes due to only 1 headlight/ not even seeing the bike as most car drivers seem to fail to see bikes all the time. my guess is you'd have to be damn lucky.
On an unlight highway? There are NO OEM light setups on motorcycles that allow a rider to see 220km/hr or 130mph into the future.Originally Posted by Tiggerz
If it was a pommie motorway (I've lived there) I would say that on most of them you would be safe at those speeds. NZ is a different story. I was nearly killed by a driver on an ulight road with his lights turned off at 50km/hr or 30mph. If I'd been doing 220km/hr I'd definitely be dead and so would the people in the car.
Unlike the UK, we don't have a Nationwide motorway system, we have what would equate to your A and B roads as national highways, and a great deal of the roading infrastructure is more B road in flavour. Nailing a stray cow, and it does happen that they get onto major "highways", would be just as catastrophic at 220 as hitting another car. Cows do after all weigh more than a Daihatsu Mira.
