Need help...been fiddling with my CR250...doh!

    Hi,

I picked up my CR250 the other day, was getting a 91 CR250, long story short I got a different bike, a 93 CR250 with a fresh rebuild.

now...when I picked it up it idled fine, no probs. I went to start it just before (first time I've fired it up since I got it) after turning the choke off it wouldn't idle right...kepts idling lower then stall. So...I thought, lets find the idle screw...oh...there it is (just above the float bowl in the carb...yeah, I now know) so adjusted that but didn't make a difference...bugger I thought and put it back to where it was (so I thought) and did some searching on the net and found out thats the fuel mixture screw...doh!! so now I've prob stuffed up the mixture.

    So...2 questions

    1) How many turns out should the mixture screw be set at for a 1993 CR250 for a safe setup (don't race, just going to piss around with mates)?

    2) Is the idle adjustment just turning the choke left and right? sounds like the newer ones are like that but couldn't find anything for the 93 model. If so I must have moved it when putting the choke on today...and now with the mixture out it def wont idle no matter what I do.

Its smoking alot more so guessing its running majorly rich.

Any help would be great, really want the bike running right for the weekend.

(Please note: I'm a 2 stroke n00b when it comes to tuning and the like)

Cheers dude, guessing the reason its not responding much now is because the air fuel mixture must be stuffed

Going to try 1.75 turns out, found out that is what the american bikes recommend...just not sure if this is the same...

Turn the screw right in, back it out about a half turn
start it and after a few seconds nail the gas, hold it open for a second and let it return... adjust from there.

Being 2stroke noob I better let you in on a secret... 2 strokes dont idle to good and they're not supposed to.

The cylinder needs gas running through it to lube it (or it'll sieze) so blip blip your way around the place, dont engine break... clutch in and blip blip while you change gear (engine break = no lube at high rpm = sieze)

Also they smoke (gas has oil in it, which smokes)

Tell you what... I'll swap you an XR200 4 stroke but that dosent idle well either...

yeah I know they smoke, it just got excessive when I was fiddling with the screw (as in could hardly see behind me!!). I've had a couple of 2 strokes before....just never had them long enough to need to do anything with them...this one I plan one keeping for ages so going to have to start learning.

"Mr tittu fingers"... hey...I can't help myself...its fun braking things and then figuring out what the hell I did...best way to learn Altho the most fustrating way as well.

Cheers guys, hope to be able to get out for a ride with some of ya after I get used to the beast.

Cheers for the heads up on that...didn't know it was bad to engine break on a 2 stroke, could have been bad!!!

Organised a ride out on murawai beach on sunday, want to practise some wheelies and just have a piss around.

will be there next time tho.

Got another question: Which way do you turn the choke to up the idle? I think its now that far out its not even responding to me turning it anymore!!

Think I might have found the problem with the idle. Just looking now, I noticed that the hose clamp was just lose on the carb side of the intake (from the carb to the engine). I know that will kill a four stroke...guessing it would do the same with a 2 stroke. Any one know? I'm thinking yes as the idle adjustment just isn't doing anything, it just dies when you don't give it any gas (when cold it idles fine for a min until heated up).

I'm going to pop down to the hard ware store and get the bolt thats missing from the clamp and see if that sorts it.

Means it'll go like hell if you find and maintain the sweet spot
Do you realise how many holes there could be if people would just take the time to take the dirt out of them?
