    Traffic sneaking!

So im riding up to a whole lot of traffic at five o clock on the way out of hamilton right, and as the 1km line or so continues to build up i take the libierty to ride all the way to the front of the lights on the left shoulder which wass complety empty, passing another rider in the traffic who seemed sort of "pissed off" with my antic, so my question is do you think its fine to creep up through traffic? personlly i think that its one of the many perks to riding a motorcycle

Provided safety comes before the need to be there in a hurry I feel we are obliged.

Definitely depends on circumstance as to weather it is possible / appropriate but it is hardly fair to make cars wait behind us.

Basically it`s our God Given Right to sneak through traffic , but as Big Dog said as long as it`s done safely and as for cages been "pissed off" wait until they start swearing at you ,that`s cool because you know someone is thinking of you and it`s just so frikin funny. Do it Safely.

It's one of the reasons for riding a bike. However, check through the threads, there's quite a lot of stuff about filtering and moving to front. The general feeling seems to be Do it safely, watch out for the odd enraged cager and also for the law. My understanding is it's ok to move up on the right with your indicator on ( overtaking) but that on the left you could be done. Also one very important thing. Watch for traffic from side roads and parked cars moving out. Somewhere in here I read of a biker that got knocked off by a cage from the left and he was at fault for "making his own lane" or something. The legal eagles on this site will be able to explain it better than me I'm sure.

I have had more cars carry on because I was patiently waiting (when the way is not clear or safe) than because I have filtered. But the overreaction of an enraged antifilterer is much more dangerous.

I only do it at times, as long as it looks like there is plenty of room, if I am with others, and they do it to.
Sometimes I just run cautious and sit back behind the cars. Espec in craP weather

Surprise surprise it is also one of the most controversial.

There is the reason that you received the nasty look from the other bike, and will be the reason that will be talking to you soon...

I can understand why if you lived in a smaller town you might question the need to "sneak" up through traffic and could probably get by just fine without ever doing it. That was me when I lived in a smaller town. But ever since I moved to the "city of sails" (or should that be, "City of cars") sneaking through traffic and lane splitting is the norm, do it safely and try to be considerate though i.e. don't force a car to put on their brakes or go too fast. Don't feel bad about it, at least you are doing something to reduce the congestion. If you were in a car the traffic would be even worse.

being a newbe rider I havn't done a lot of 'lane splitting' but have on the odd occasion that I have felt it safe to do so. I don't think there is anything wrong with it provided you feel confident in doing it

If he seemed pissed off, it's just that you were thinking enough to lanesplit, and he wasn't... As long as there isn't a cop in line (in front of me), I see no problem with lanesplitting...

Ps... the lanesplitting that I do when it comes to 'boy-racers' wouldn't be considered "sneaking" at all... full revs between the boy-racers just to show them what's what
