I have had it for a little while and have 1400k’s on it. I don’t intend doing big jumps or racing it. I did all that 30 years ago or so when the RM’S and YZ’s and forward mounted rear shocks were new a new concept in motorcycling and coming on the scene. More to go out and find somewhere to camp out and fish/hunt some of those South Island rivers I have passed on my cruiser and thought, I’m sure I could get a trail bike up there…. so to speak. I bought it because it’s fast enough not to get run down on the highway. If I wanted something that went like snot I would have bought another bike. Just thought I could wake this puppy up a little. I also use it as a around town short run bike.
I'd bypass the pumper for a while and get a rear spring and Emulators/Intiminators in the front.
A 14t front sprocket also helps pep it up without compromising cruising speed.
Whats the gain for my "sedate " riding style for rear spring and Emulators/Intiminators in the front?
Mo NZ... There's other things you can try, like raising the needle, opening the airbox, drilling the slide to improve performance. Nordie knows what works best out of these, and will give best performance. But I would upgrade the suspension first, after all...power is useless without control
Thanks for the replies. What sort of rear spring and where do I buy it?
FWIW I weigh in a 100kgs
Email ProCycle in the States.
You'll probably be after an 8kg spring minimum. The stock one is 6.7kg.
The front springs are about 0.43kg progressives and you'll need around 0.5kg straight wound.
If you get Intiminators for the front, you don't need heavier springs. EddieB may have a set for sale?
Emulators still need the heavier springs.
Or have a look here > http://www.procycle.us/bikepages/dr650.html
I have the 8.3 kg spring ( I weigh about the same as you Mo NZ ) and while it seems a bit stiff it will/should be fine with a bit of gear on the back. I put 80mm spacers and 20w oil in the front and while it stiffened things up and seems to take care of the brake dive I'm not that keen on the results.
Why improve the suspension it's soo much funnier to ride with the standard pogo setup

Can anyone tell me what effect if the mesh screen in the air intake boot at the airbox is removed or left in. I have a TM40, K&N filter and opened top airbox. Also a GSXR muffler/STD header. Will removing the mesh screen make any noticeable difference? Cheers.
