well thanks to the boy in blue on the gold( its more gold than yellow .. pics did not do her justice)beast for the escort back into the magnificant Manawatu .. as I was held up behind a few trucks & in desperate need of a pee stop in Taihape, Al decided to ride to met me since I was still a wee way out from Vinegar hill .. met at bottom of mangaweka hill ... with a cop on my ass was good to see Al doing respectable speeds
decided to negotiate the hill & turn off the main road so BJ could have a run while I checked out the beast .. & have a sit on her ..
what can I say .. up she is sexy as hell lots of curves & a wide ass .. can totally relate to the wide ass ... more cushing for the pushing ... oopss I mean .....![]()
then it was fun with Al escorting me back to his place for the much needed coffee .. watching him counter steer .. rapid acceleration (yeah yeah yeah .. that fuel injection works well against a diesel 4x4) .. honestly driving absolutely cracking up knowing Al was having a blast out there ...
well its official .. I am back in the Manawatu .. was awesome seeing the bike Al .. thanks for the escort mate .. can not wait for a pillion ride on the beast .. or to test ride the Gixxer in the garage![]()
now for some serious bike riding time over the next 5 days til my annuals are over![]()

Hi everyone![]()
I thought I'd provide an update in the journey I'm having with me new bike![]()
Yesterday was a quiet one. As mentioned, I'd finished the 500 miles required before first service the previous night.
I really enjoyed this experience, and it's been great to see all the 'firsts' happening for both the bike and myself.
Although, I was quite happy to have completed the first 500, as at least half of it was done in the wet and cold.
My gear has held up well, with the exception of my gloves and my left boot is letting in a bit of water. But a Pac n Save bag dealt to that surprisingly well![]()
Yesterday started off quietly as I really NEEDED to clean the bike. It was absolutely filthy, and I wanted to get rid of that corrosive dirt as soon as I could. So, I spent a quiet couple of hours just getting into all the places I could and giving her a good wash down, lube, and general exploration.
Well, I'm impressed. The build quality is supurb, with so much thought and attention going into the design of all parts of the whole. I noticed a few electrical components had been made in Spain, and apparantly the most fail prone are the German ones!
The whole machine just oozes (modern) character. Ok, so a few panels don't quite line up, the rear cover requires an 'interesting' technique to fit correctly, you can't check the coolant level without unscrewing the seat (another interesting arrangement), I'd love an oil sightglass, an air temperature gauge would be nice, and it would be great to adjust the throttle cable without taking the tank off, the rpm gauge is a little boring, but really, that's all part of it.
I'm looking forward to getting the fairings off and having a look around, as it's really tightly cowled and not easy to peek inside. But the fairings, esecially the top one and the windscreen really do the job aerodynamically, and there is very little buffeting or wind noise at open road speeds, and as mentioned elsewhere, the sensation of speed is minimal.
Make no mistake though, this thing is fast, smooth, and slippery. It's very easy to be lulled into a false sense of security in the cruise, and on the main highways, the speedo needs regular scanning. I'm actually quite chuffed that everything is in imperial units, it just seems somehow more 'British'![]()
I think this one may have been originally destined for the British or US market maybe, and although I am told that I can probably change it all to metric, I don't think I will.
So, after the clean, I couldn't resist a quick trip around the block and 15 miles later I thought I had better put it away or I might get told off by Triumph lol.
So I decided to take one of the gixxer's for a spin instead, and as I was warming her up, I really couldn't help thinking that you can't beat the early gixxer profile for sheer poetry of design. It's lean, mean, and still a stunning looking bike.
But wow, what a difference in ride experience. I felt really cramped and low to the road, but after a few km's I found the position again, and just enjoyed.
Dog's and I had arranged to take the trailer up to the Naki to pick up Dog's Daytona which has been up there for an inspection and service, a groom, and a bit of bling. We hit the road about 6, and arrived in Opunaki just after 8. Here we were greeted by one hell of a nice guy and his son who run a specialist Triumph tune and service workshop. Well, this had to be one of the most enlightening experiences I've had in a long time and three hours later, fed and coffeed we loaded Barry's bike onto the trailer and finally arrived back in Palmerston about 2.30 am this morning.
If there are any Triumph owners reading this who want to find out more about the stunning service and expertise we were treated to last night, feel free to pm me or Dog's for more details.
My bike was due in at 9 this morning for it's first service and I actually made it out the door and down to the shop. An hour, a few question and answer sessions later, I had her back and headed to Feilding for a coffee and chill out.
Around this time I discovered that Chanceyy was in Turangi on the way home. Hmmm, this will be a good chance to escort her back to the Manawatu and get some of those much needed miles up.
It's a nice day, and Vinegar Hill should be quite rideable. So off I headed and was soon zipping down the straight into Waituna West. Watch it guys if you're going through there, the stone surface is a bit loose on the first uphill corner and I bounced around a fair bit. I stopped and discovered quite a few stones stuck by tar into my rear tyre. They had caused a bit of rear skipping, so I removed them and continued on. It's only that one bit for some reason, maybe it has been resealed recently.
I met Chancey just north of Mangaweka and it was time for a catch up, yak, walk for BJ, and mutual Daytona admiration![]()
Then back over the hill, and I'm just onto the first of the uphill twisty when the 600th mile turned over. Great, I can now go to 7000 rpm, and took the opportunity immediately! Well, this was just what was needed on these corners and it was very handy to be able to power up without changing up, then down in rapid succession. I was able to use engine braking much more effectively, and therefore have more attention free to concentrate on the road, instead of the engine and gearbox. On the straight, 7000 rpm proved quite capable![]()
The power delivery is smooth and very strong without being brutal, and I never felt in danger from the rear losing traction while powering out of corners. The potential was there of course, but those Bridgestone BT 010's really are a good strong road tyre and in fact are only one of three "approved" tyre types for this model Daytona. The others being the Pirelli Dragon Evo, and the Metzeler MEZ3.
So back to my place for a coffee and another chat, and 632 miles done!
At 800 miles I can go to 8000 rpm not above that until 1000 miles, and that is the end of the official run in period. Although I was reliably informed last night that the motor won't really be truly bedded in until 3000 miles have passed and I will heed that advice and feel satisfied that this bike has been truly well treated in the correct manner.
I'm just rapt that I've had the opportunity to own and run in one of the worlds legendary machines, and I've (hopefully) done this in the way in which it was intended. I've not gone above the recommended engine speeds, I've managed to avoid long periods at constant rpm, and I've been very aware of the need to give her plenty of power variation whilst keeping within the restrictions applicable at the time.
At this time, the 05 955i is the last of the Daytona's, but word has it that there may be another in the not so distant future.
Hope so![]()
hell of a write up there Al .. excellent job .. & thanks again gave me the real warm fuzzies to be escorted back like that ... esp the laff moments![]()
bet them fingers are worn out now .. ready for a massage![]()
