In my case, I was paying a good amount voluntarily until the ex and her new hubby wanted more, they went for an assessment thru IRD, which had to include business taxable income, they ended up with less.

It is that point where she is supported by a new partner that seems really rude to have to keep up such a high level of payment... maybe havle it at that point or have the funds go into trust for the child only? Surely they can organise their own financial affairs and allow you to get on with life!

Goodwill is paramount with voluntary agreements and new partners have an influence because possibly they have children who they see as missing out because of the level of c/s going out and some new partners don't see it as their job to help support a new partners children even though they have invited them to live with them. It's hugely complicated and that is where IRD can step in and make a determination in the interests of the children. However, they can only assess the liable parent and not joint household income. So potentially a separated father can have a good lifestyle with a high a earning spouse, but be earning very little taxable income thru a business or whatever. That's when the s**t hit's the fan with the ex.
