yeah we usually go camping, quite a mission with all 6 kids and the older 2's boyfriends as well, we used to go every year and take a week, more recently we have been going away with just 4 kids and the boat and tent, a hell of a lot easier on the chief cook and bottle washer ( me)

I take a small gas cooker,one small billy,large enamal cup,Sleeping bag,fly,swag,spinning rod,first aid kit,map,.308,an ride into the scrub off the Napier/Taupo rd or the desert road.It all fits on a bike no worrys. I like to be by myself so I win all the arguments.

Only go camping once a year - to a very well organised festival (we get to camp on the cricket pitch outfield) in a very pretty little village.

So in terms of what we have to take, it is just tent, clothes, sleeping bags. There are lots of places to get food and drink (inc two very good pubs), a huge number of portaloos and enough standpipes to handle the numbers, so a lot easier.

If we were camping elsewhere, as someone said above, depends where you were going, what the facilities were like - if it had shops, places to eat etc, then I'd take no more than I do now.



(Sadly, the festival is in doubt for next year - the woman who organised it was the wife of one of the band members... and after 22 years of marriage, the silly bugger couldn't keep it in his pants. She carried on and organised this year's one, but obviously doesn't want anything to do with the band ever again. Without her, it'd cost a bundle to get the kind of organising she did professionally, so it might be the end of my camping trips!)

I can't be arsed with tents, so I always stay in theose little tourist flats or basic cabins at camping grounds. That way if it rains at least you have somewhere dry to sleep. Also a couple of places I'm staying on my South Island trip have a kitchens with all the gear so I don't have to worry about pots etc either - although of course it does cost a little more.

I have a bicycle touring tent ,(great outdoors).it packs up small and is light. you can put it up my yourself it dosen't let the wet in.have slept in it for two months while in europe.I used one pot over a primus,lived on rice and pasta.Have a Therm-a-rest camping mattress for sleeping and small sleeping bag with a silk liner.

Well I just got back from 3 nights in the field. The gear you take depends on what sort of camping you are doing, the conditions and length.

If you mean a 1-2 week hike through the wilderness where you carry everything on your back, that will be a lot different to say parking the 4x4 in a campsite on a busy beach.

If I went camping on a bike I would just take a thermal mat, sleeping bag and bivvy bag (kind of big waterproof cocoon bag that goes around you + sleeping bag), ditch the tent and just sleep under trees. That would easily fit in a typical sports bag.

But hell if you are taking a 4x4, just load it up with tent, matresses/air beds, blankets, the LPG BBQ and just buy your food from the supermarket down the road as you need it!

I *dream* of doing that. I remember looking wistfully out the window last time I drove along SH5 in the cage. You lucky bugger.

Well, perhaps not 'luck'.

But it'll be a long time before I can find the time and get that kind of leave pass from the CO.

I plan to take up fishing this summer and I'm keen to try and get all the gear and the missus on the bike.... I know, I know - Why are you taking the missus... - Cause she can cook the fish better than me!!
