Wet, Wild & Wonderful Whangamomona Weekend

    Dates 30th June & 1st July 2007
    Overnight

Welcome to the 2nd Adventure Assault – Whangamomona
This ride is suitable for all bikes that are suited for gravel roads.
    Pillions welcome too
“The way it was” Through the back woods of Taranaki, explore the beginnings and the way it was done…The Forgotten world highway once was a thriving community, the little villages of Tangarakau and others were established to house railway and road workers by the hundreds. Evidence of these little communities and houses are still to be found, travelling this highway is definitely a step back in time.

    Meeting
    Southern Riders –
    Wellington –
    7.30am Plimmerton Weigh Station

    Others Meet at
BP 2GO Taupo Quay Click to view it is the Number 3 on the map
    Taupo Quay Wanganui
    Time – 10.00am

    Northern Riders
May wish to meet us in Taumaruanui at BP 2GO Taumarunui Hakiaha St at 2.00pm, or if you prefer ride further South and meet us in Raetihi at the Caltex Service Station on the Main road at 1pm, or head into the Whangnui River road towards Pipiriki (keep an eye out for the first bike and pull over and turn around in a safe location where the other riders will have plenty of room to slow down and stop to meet and greet you all)

I can load GPS waypoints if you like, if any of you will have a GPS unit?

DAY 1 – 280km approx (from Wanganui to Whangamomona)

The plan is to meet in Wanganui, then follow the Whanganui River Road through Jerusalem, Pipiriki and on to National Park and Taurmaranui via Raetehi.
We will meet up with any Northern Riders in Taumarunui.

    Then it’s onto Whangamomona
Accommodation is at the Whangamomona Hotel – Cost is $95pp and includes Dinner, Bed and Cooked or continental breakfast.
The Whangamomona Hotel is the most remote country hotel in New Zealand on State Highway 43 - Forgotten World Highway, between Stratford and Taumarunui.
Beautiful rugged countryside, spectacular scenery and it is rich in history.
There are 11 rooms and the hotel can sleep 22 in total, so please contact the Hotel to confirm your room. First in first served.
    Phone (06) 7625823

There is a camping ground just down the road for those that elect not to stay at the hotel.
Please contact Whangamomona Village Motor Camp on (06) 762-5822.

    DAY 2 – 310km approx

We start the day by heading south then turn off at Matau down Junction Rd, out to Urenui, then into Okoki, Kaka Rd, Uruti Rd, Moki Rd, Kiwi Rd, back out to Highway 3, Awakino, riding through a few tunnels along the way.
Then for those that are keen we could complete a 60km round, side trip to Waikawau beach, then we head back towards Piopio on Taumatamaire Rd, and then back down Ohura Rd to Ohura, before heading our separate ways.

If you are interested in this trip, please register your interest, here on the KB calendar
The meeting times and distances may change so regularly check this post for any changes.

    Cheers
    Scott

    Epic plan

    Sounds pretty epic Zukin,

    whangamomona here we come

I'm jealous of the portion from wanganui to whangamomona sounds very interesting but may have to wait for another time. We'll have to settle with the coastal to raglan and kawhia way. By the way, anyone familiar with the area could suggest the most gravelous way from kawhia to taumarunui?

Thumbs up get in and book your room at Whanga Pub if you're serious

Hi Folks - I just called and spoke with John at the Whanga Pub and booked a single room. His response was 'you with that motorcycle group?' to which I replied 'yes!'. Suggest any of you contemplating this ride don't dilly dally!

incidentally, my wife and I stayed there at Labour Weekend last and the kai is great! - cheers Aslan

Young1 - the cabins are OK - could be chilly though at that time of year - bring some extra warm gear and/or cuddle up to Mrs Young1 - cheers Aslan
