The top of 22 is fucked but an alternate route heading in the same direction is to pop over the top of Hunua from Clevedon (via monument rd and paparimu) to SH2, then down from Mangatawhiri to Mercer (I forget the road).
Quick jaunt down SH1 to Rangiriri then towards Glen Murray take a left down Rotongaro Rd to Hetherington Rd, right up Hetherington to SH22 where it is not too bad through to Ngaruawahia.

That rangiriri back road is pretty good. Wont tell you why, you already know.

Went & surveyed 22 this afternoon, appart from a little bit of gravel & the odd wet patch it is all good.
Gravel patches start about 20km in from the tuakau bridge.
Wet patches happen everywhere.
At a sane(ish) speed it is no problem & some of the gravel is even signposted
bikes and babes are best naked
I found I had a fluffy seam when my crotch got wet.
