Suzuki Freewind LCD display

Was riding home Thursday last week, in the pissing rain, pitch black, howler of a night.

Noticed that the multi-purpose LCD display seemed a bit dark. Looking again it appeared as if there was light coming only from the right hand side of the unit.

I can't for the life of me remember whether this is normal or not, as I've not really paid any attention to it. I've had a look at the reference manual I have, and the diagram seems to show only one bulb for illuminating the display.

Before I pull the unit off and have a look (and thereby risk breaking old gaskets, seals etc for which I have no spares) does anyone know for certain whether there are two bulbs, or whether only the right hand side is illuminated fully?

By the way I have fitted the Mitas E-08's a few months ago, and have had absolutely no issues with them as far as road riding goes in fine, drizzly and pouring wet conditions. Would recommend them.

Checked my XF display & it is evenly lit. Also checked service manual & it shows one 1.7W bulb. Maybe yours has just worked loose? If you remove the instrument panel you can continuity test the terminals - have you got that diagramme? I can scan & email if you need it.
I remember a thread on a foreign Freewind website that discussed LCD fading. If the meter unit is faulty, FXR150's use one that 'looks' very similair, apart from the rpm red line being higher. More chance of finding this model @ wreckers than XF, assuming they are compatable.

I agree the Mitas EO8's are great tyres & run one on the rear - very similair to my front Tourance. They instill confidence to scape the pegs on a track day plus are fine on hard packed gravel. Not so flash in the snow though!
I have also ordered a set of EO7's, to use for loose gravel / soft track riding.

Yes I have the diagram. It is the suggestion of the single bulb that has me confused. I don't have a continuity tester, but since half the display is lit something must be working!

Nothing for it but to remove the unit and have a look. Looks simple enough.

Hi, I had a similar problem and also experienced fading. I was getting worried, but then after a few weeks it started to blank out on me. It was only when I stalled it at a set of lights (unable to start again) that I found the problem. The battery terminals needed a good clean. There was no evidence of acid or anything else causing the problem however after a good clean and tighten up, the problem did not return. Your problem does sound like the bulb has slipped away from the bulb holder. Good luck. Cheers.
