Where to get my wheel rims powder coated

A lot of places do industrial work, so quality of finish isn't necessarily their top priority (perhaps price, perhaps the ability to handle bulk lots). When you're getting and considering each companies quote, ask them about whether they specialise in small job lots. Ideally you want a coater that specialises in decorative work, rather than bulk coating.

Many of the bigger places will produce a result that is perfectly good, so I'm not saying discount them entirely, but having to pay to have a bad job stripped and redone by someone else will leave a foul taste in your mouth.

thought id add my 2c as i used to do this for a job in hawkesbay.

firstly your rims will have to stripped i.e tyres and bearings and anything else that will get ruined at 220 degrees.

Then degreased.

what type of rims, alloy, or steel, both will have to be blasted right back to bare prefebly with a very fine grit sand /bead/caustic/glass, whatever is available but it has to be fine as the powder has to file the surface smoothly.

generally the rims should be baked off in the oven to release any gases or impuritess that may be in the metal before they put the powder on.

if the rims are steel they will need a coat of a zinc rich primer to prevent rust around seams ect.

the bearing areas will then need to be masked to prevent powder build up where you dont want it.

pick ya colour and if you wish you can add what they call an anti graffiti clear coat which is glossy and harder than the colour coat, also easier to clean.

thats the way i did customers wheels and frames and the look on there faces when they picked them up made the job worth doing right.

youll save money by doing as much as you can first but the rims have to be mint when they get to the coater.

I dont work there anymore but try hawkesbay powder coaters in dunlop place, onekawa, napier
