Where are you in Auckland? Clutch is a reasonably easy job. A clutch holder tool makes the job easier. Usually only the friction plates need replaceing sometimes the steel plates do as well.

Im on the Shore. I dont have any tools.
I spoke to a mechanic (no names mentioned) who rekons about $1000 worst case scenario, but he wont know until he opens her up. It could be that the engine has been laboured most of its life and the plates have vibrated themselves out of alignment or the whole thing could be fkd.

Perfection is not something you should ever attain, but something to always strive for. For if we actually achieve our idea of perfection, is it then any longer perfect?

It sounds like the plates but the 97/98 5 spring clutch can do with a set of Barnett springs.
The cam set may be worn also.

Here is my latest TL mod,a 2006 GSXR1000 clutch adapted to a TL drive gear.I could probably take a look at the clutch in your bike.

All you need to do to access the clutch is.

Put the bike on the side stand (so it is leaning to the left) A container underneath does not hurt but no oil should come out.
Remove the clutch cover bolts with a 8mm socket.
Remove the clutch spring bolts and then the pressure plate.(10mm socket)
You now have access to the clutch plates.
