To what - fix it till it breaks?

Current 1450 air cooled engine is really nice - the restricted pipes and epa gear give them a mid range flat spot - but let 'em breathe and the donk already exceeds the cornering clearance of most of their models.

Very nice, I can see myself sitting in Tokyo traffic on one with an american facemask bandanna and a japanese meatball flag on the back of the tassled jacket!

And a matt black CHiPs open face helmet with johnny reb riding boots... probably something I'll do when I get out of my faired bikes phase...

Maybe its not a problem here, but our rules regarding epa restriction are pretty loose. In the US (harelys main market) in the hotter states and when the bikes are stationary (happens alot at hog rallies) alot of the bikes are overheating. And once they get to hot the engines start cutting out.

hmmm - and reports of pinging too - my concern is that if you give a fat boy more power it's a formula for high siding it.

Dunno how to post links but go to 'cyclespot' forum - then 'dyna' bit of the Harley secton.
There's an article on a fan designed to fix that problem, the fan fits where the horn originally was and looks almost the same.
Works on demand and moves a fair bit of air according to the write-up.

They also have a system on the cop and parade bikes where it turns off the back cylinder don't they?

Yeah I have read about them, as well as additional oil coolers, other fan systems etc. The fact is that the EPA regulations are only going to get tighter, so unless harley wants to loose HP and increase exhaust pressures, the only reliable way they are going to meet the new guidelines is to go to liquid cooling.

This isnt going to hurt harley much, just annoy some of its fans, just as fuel injection did a few years ago, electric start did decades ago, suspension did a long time ago........

With the line of aftermarket equipment available for harleys, air cooled ones such as yours scumdog will be around for as long as there is petrol. Like the M16 or 350 chev theres no part you cant replace, upgrade or change for something simular. Heck the Aircooled bikes are probably going to be worth more, and those who just buy harley for the name will keep buying them, even if they have radiators.

    Good stuff.

I lament the demise of the Street Rod.
Fast, potent, good handling bike. Didn't sell.
