Ah - An inspirational post from one of lifes true contibutors...... Probably a bit brief but certainly to the point!

In my opinion - and I guess only in my opinion - the ernest efforts of a few amatuers have always held more appeal to the average Kiwi that the polished perfection of the practised professional. One of the aims of these competitions is to raise the standards of those of us interested in such things with informed comment and in the case of some of the well known and highly respected photographers on the site tips for improvement....

Richard Bach said (about writing admittedly but it applies here) "A Professional writer is an amateur that didn't quit".

Constructive criticisim is the order of the day and encouragement...

    Best regards

Blimey! Who'd have thought that a simple photo competition would ignite such vitriolic retorts. At the end of the day we as individuals either like a photo or we don't. It's a subjective thing surely? I bet there are a few of us here on KB who think we know it all when it comes to taking photos - and viewing other peoples'. As Paul suggests, constructive and objective criticism is welcomed but subjective un-substantiated one-liners such as "They're all crap!" are of no value at all. Sit a monkey at a piano and eventually it will play Beethoven's Fifth!!

Nah! When the world went digital, suddenly we were all expert photographers or graphic designers or film producers or video editors. Some then brag about their new found "expertise" and some don't.

I've enjoyed looking at the entries. Some more than others, but on the whole
I see some great shots that I wish I'd taken.

Some of my photographic and video production efforts can be seen here:

    Key point for pictures

Static pictures of bikes are boring - unless its your own bike.

A Picture is about a action or a mood. Nordies photo was the best because something was happening in the photo.

The sunset could have been an okay mood shot, but really the bike was mid shot so the composition was wrong. Also, the lighting was wrong which is really what mood photos are all about - Was the shot about the sunset or the bike, kinda both which really means neither.

Its not about the bike, its about what you do with it - lets see some more photos with people riding.

Could that be why this one came second, even if it was not the best lighting and quality?

By far the best photo (from a photographic point of view) is the Blue BMW. But even that one is really quite boring.

So Katman... if you are so great, why dont you spend the time taking some piccies and submitting them for the KB calendar... surely your time would be better spent doing that, than ragging a few people who are not professional photographers and were just trying to have some fun?

People are doing their thing. If they are out and about with a camera and flick the pic on KB I don't see a problem. Personaly I'd just like to see a best photo competition that may or may not be biker related. A good photo is a good photo no matter what is it of. If I remember correctly this comp. started off just a as a photo competition then some said it must be biker related.

I think some people need a reality check. A photo competition should only attract photos that actually have some worth as a photo (as opposed to snaps that are merely a record of an event or an item).

yea probably best not to try in the first place really. if theres one thing this world need its more people not having a go. honestly who do these people think they are putting their photos on here for us all to look at and enjoy. come on guys as none of you are award winning photographers can you please remove your photos as the poor standard is really quite offensive. Also, and i think i speak for both myself and katman when i say this, as the majority of people here are not authors i think it would be for the best if you could all stop writing in this forum.

come on katman! maybe you should join a photographic forum.

My apologies. Maybe I should just leave you lot to your knitting circle. Feel free to celebrate mediocrity.

Oh please...knitting is sooooo yesterday. Crochet and cross-stitch are far cooler! In fact I came third in this years KCCCC... That's the Kapiti Coast Crochet and Cross-stitch Competition.
