Tour de France - Bike Spotting

Who's been watching the Tour de France???.....

...and when you watch do you find yourself trying to spot what the Marshalls and camera crews are riding?

I really enjoy the spectacle, the code of ethics, the politics of team racing, the strength & fortitude of the riders, the magnificent castles, sunflower fields and mountain passes that is 'Le Tour' and this year I have also enjoyed doing a bit of bike spotting.

There is actually an array of bikes amongst the race support. I've spotted ST's (11 & 1300's)...of course....and a few Concours 14's which prompted me to start this thread.

This morning, whilst watching the replay at the gym in the Maillot Rouge, (that's because I'm a legend-in-my-own-mind and consider myself to be the fastest of the couch potatos), I'm sure I spotted a bright yellow concours for the briefest of moments, (bloody photographers and editors aren't doing their jobs properly). It was just like the yellow fire engine that hailed the streets of Wellington in the early 70's...it stood out like dogs balls and it was much nicer (& gruntier I'm sure) than the drab grey only option.

Am I a bit eccentric or are there others of you out there that can't help yourselves from doing a bit of 'Bike Spotting'?

Am watching Jericho at the moment and theres always a motorbike parked in the town's main street. I'm sure its a Bandit 12 but ya only ever get a super quick glimpse.

Did you see the support/camera motorbike down off the road on its side. What was going on there ?

You forget the drug taking...???? A little harder to spot... ask Landis and Co...

when the race gets into the mountains and the pace is a lot slower it is far easier to spot the bikes and pick out the different makes. apparently the riders are all volunteers who take their holidays in july just to do the tour!

I've always wondered if they modify the bikes to suit the unique task they are using them for. Cruising at 25-50kmh all day with a pillion whos facing the otherway and probably isn't making life easier for the rider.

I helped out carrying a bike marshall at the Wellington Triathlon earlier this year. The camera bike had bloody great wooden running boards fitted to give the camerman and big platform. Didn't seem to hamper them in any way.

In terminator 2 you can see a white and red VT250 parked on the side of the road towards the start.

I notice that john conner is riding an XR, but it sounds like a 2 stroke!!!!

What bike is arnie riding in the first one, the terminator?!

I've been doing the same thing too, Koro. The Belgian Police FJRs looked magnificent!

You mean to tell me that those pretty blue bikes with the nice colour co-ordinated blue flashing lights are FJR's.....unfortunately, I have to agree, they do look very nice.
