Rental bikes - help needed

A UK-based Aussie mate of mine plans to tour NZ in February for 2 weeks or so next year and will be looking for a bike to hire.  It's not something I have any knowledge of at all and could use some advice from anyone who has had experience of the rental scene.  I'll do some detailed follow-ups, but need a start point to build on.

• Do prices vary much between suppliers?
• Are there any traps for the unwary?
• Is there an equivalent of Rent-a-Dent?  (Reliable, but not brand new)
• Anything else I should know?

Motorcycle City in Lower Hutt also rent out bikes, dont know what they are like. A mate of mine from Aussie was going to rent a bike from them. They usually have a good choice.

Hi Geoff, there is a place at Tuakau (just south of Bombays)

called " Swiss Travel Rent", Not as much selection, but a good guy, and good prices, If you want more info send me a PM, I can fax you his details.
