Rode it home!!! Rode perfectly!! Radiator cap gone, clutch, brake lever and foot brake pedal, need replacing, handlebars bent, etc etc!

Even if possible to ride, not "perfectly" surely. John.

Would an insurance company write a bike off for damage that minor?

And I am not talking about the damaged lady owner...

Nope. One would think that if you write a detailed listing of the damage then you would have an idea re the accident...

May the bridges I burn light the way.

From what I have picked up insurance companies only de regd them if they suspect chassis/fork etc damage. If they think they are ok, like at Turners, they leave them regd, as they get alot more for them if they still have the plates and you don't have to re vin them.
They must have done a deal with their insurance to still have it, rather than the insurance company selling it on.

Sounds like theres more to this than meets the eye!!

I thought insurance companies wrote off bikes on a cost basis, not just fork damage.

My other half binned his BMW, and the fairing and front end repairs were getting close to $10K. So the insurance people told him as that was their upper limit, they could repair the bike or give him the full replacement money.

    He chose the money . . .

This is in Aus though, might be a bit different here.

Husband's bike was sold at auction as a deregistered wreck, but I see your point.

Look I'm by far not an expert here!
But we both are correct I think. The above would have been written off on a cost basis but not de regd. It would still have the plates on it at the auction. I'm pretty sure here in NZ they only take the plates off if they suspect structural damage and want it to go through the re vinning process to make sure it is O'K for the road again.
The bike in question was de regd which means more than just replacement bars and a radiator cap.

Reckless - I wouldn't have a clue on the ins and outs either, just stating what our experience was.

Is it a popular pasttime, buying wrecked bikes and doing them up? It'd be a good project for winter, though I wonder if you'd end up spending just as much money as a good second hand one considering how expensive the parts are.
