Maybe someone like Jetboy would know? I would've thought that even if they (insurance company) wrote it off, they wouldn't want to dereg it unless absolutely necessary, they'll get more at auction with a plate.

Nah, they risk too much liability selling a still rego'd bike that has been damaged and then someone totalling themselves on a machine that had some underlying damage that got missed. Logic says that a bike that has had a slow lowside and been scraped will not sustain strutural or major damage, however, it is nigh on impossible/not very cost effective to ascertain the entire extent of damage, and portray this to the purchaser of said buggered bike.
This way, bike is sold in a manner so as not to be ridden on the road, it then becomes an engineers responsibility as they have to cert. it before it can be re-registered.
I have seen a special edition 2006 R1 with small scraping be sold de-rego'd, in reality, needed a new lever and some small bits and pieces and would be mint again bar some scratches.
Nail your colours to the mast that all may look upon them and know who you are.
It takes a big man to cry...and an even bigger man to laugh at that man.
Damn right they would dereg it for minor stuff. When I got taken out on my RZ350 the insurance company deregistered it due to 'structural damage'. I got paid out for it, (luckily a cop had seen the silly cow drive through a give way & straight into the side of me!) then I bought the wreck back & a quick check with a straightedge & tape didn't reveal any structural damage unless you consider radiators & plastics structural. I think they do it partly to cover their arses & partly to save themselves the hassle of rebuilding something.
That one does sound dodgy though...
