I generally like the series but I was disappointed by the ending. Harry goes to his death, dies, and yet returns back. This stinks of the ancient Greek concept of deus ex machina. In my opinion, the fact that he wins the big war and leaves the arena unscathed cheapens his (and others’) past sacrifices. If Harry killed Voldemort and just continued as if nothing happened, was Voldemort really such a big threat? I hate sugar-coating.
Would we believe Tolkien if Frodo would have returned to Shire and continued living happily ever after? No! The central concept of the Lord of The Rings is that great victories require great sacrifices. Frodo had to go because some wounds just cannot heal (George’s ear, anybody?).
On the side note, I think this is exactly what is wrong with Iraqi war. You just don’t win world wars by sending in the contingent of 50000 troops. Wars are won by millions of foot soldiers, not by high tech aircraft or by one wizard yelling “You!!! Cannot!!! Pass!!!”. Perhaps before starting the war, GW should have read some Tolkien.
In my opinion, a much more believable ending would have been something like that:
a) Longbottom kills the snake, but not in a ninja samurai style but perhaps by accident - swinging the sword blindly and accidentally killing Nagini with it. After all he was, is, and shall remain clumsy.
b) Harry realizes that with other horcrixes out of the way, he can finish off Voldemort by fulfilling the prophecy (neither can live if other survives). He formally calls Voldemort to a duel. Voldemort, without realizing how much their fates are connected attacks him with a fatal curse. The curse partially reflects off Harry and kills both instantly. The war is won but at terrible cost.
c) Fast forward 19 years. Professor Longbottom and his wife Ginny are sending off their son Harry to Hogwarts. Neville reassures his nervous son that he will certainly be able to live up to his name - after all he is named after the real hero – the boy who sacrificed himself so others may live.
But then again, if the book was to end like this, I would have complained that the idea was stolen from Tolkien.
That's what I think about it anyway. You may sturt throwing rotten tomatoes now.
------------ EDITED ------
Regarding the 8th book: I've read this morning that Rowlings has announced that all her "deleted scenes" will be released as "the Hogwarts Encyclopedia", which she will start compiling after some R&R.
"People are stupid ... almost anyone will believe almost anything. Because people are stupid, they will believe a lie because they want to believe it's true, or because they are afraid it might be true. People's heads are full of knowledge, facts, and beliefs, and most of it is false, yet they think it all true ... they can only rarely tell the difference between a lie and the truth, and yet they are confident they can, and so all are easier to fool." -- Wizard's First Rule
