Yes but it is not much difference in distance, I went that way (not into Waitahuna) last year to the P Penguin. John.

OK, sounds like an exploratory ride is called for.

"I came into this game for the action, the excitement... go anywhere, travel light,... get in, get out,... wherever there's trouble, a man alone... Now they got the whole country sectioned off; you can't make a move without a form."

Paved roads are just another example of wasted tax payer dollars.

Have you looked at Google Maps? Worth a look. Cheers

The only route I can find on Google maps is to take Mitchell's Flat road to Waitahuna, then Waitahuna Valley Road to Round Hill. Although it doesn't go through Waitahuna, the turnoff is only 1 km short. I believe there may be a forestry road that goes directly to Round Hill from Mahinerangi.

Yes but some maps don't show the link up to Mahinerangi!

You come up from the bridge over the lake (heading South) turn right then left. It's a good road. John.

That is the Mitchell's Flat route. I already know that one, so unless RM can come up with some other interesting way, that is probably what it will have to be. Back in the days when I lived at Waipori Falls (28 years ago) I knew of a track that went from Mahinerangi up to Waipori Station, and from there you could look down on Round Hill. Now with all the forestry in the area I thought that there was a new forestry road down to the Round hill area.

My son and daughter in law, used to live in the house on the left as you climb away from Lake Mahinerangi bridge, so used to know my way about there but get a bit confused now that the trees have grown and time has passed..

So far, I intend to ride down to the PP via Dansey Pass, Middlemarch, Lee Flat, Mahinerangi, Waitahuna Gully road to Brucie's place.

I really enjoyed that ride last year, it has such a lot of variety! John.

I think youre on the right track there J - although I don't know the road names, I just drive there.
As you come from mahingerangi towards Waitahuna you come to a T intersection about 3-4 km before Waitahuna - if you turn right you'll go onto the seal and on to Waitahuna. Turn left and come up the Waitahuna Gully road. Eventually it will meet Round Hill Rd, turn left and I'm about 300m on the right.
    (Alternatively just follow Oldrider)
I was intending going back out that way on Sat morning as part of my gravel route to the PP (but only as far as Waitahuna.) Theres no forestry roads that I know of that would link in for that bit - there are forestry roads up on the Waitahuna Heights but theres also a few locked gates which we ride round on the dirt bikes but the Adv Bikes are a bike heavy for what we do.

Thanks RM, That is the route I intended when I suggested to Shrek Lone Rider that we meet at this end of Danseys and ride back country to your place, though in the back of my mind I was sure that there was a forestry route I hadn't ridden before.

Although, I could lead them down the Waipori Gorge to Berwick, then take some back roads (is it Perry Road?) to the Manuka Gorge, and come into your place from the opposite direction.

    Not long to go now.
If the waether was really lousy on the Friday then over the tops via Mahingerangi won't be pleasant so keep the option of going down through the Waipori Valley. Once you get back onto the highway you could go out to Taieiri Mouth from Waihola (still gravel but going to be sealed) and then travel along the coast and back in at Milton and on up to here.
Lots of options depending on time and weather

Nothing to do with the PP but I had an impromptu go at Adventure riding to a rally on the way to the Cold Kiwi.

For those adventure riders going to the PP: Don't forget lunch at Danseys pub, then the Tiki tour to RuralMan's.
