Sorry about your misfortune, get well soon.

I hate riding around town or even suburbs because of this very reason, if I have to crash, I'll rather crash on the track

Stink man. Bad news about being hit. Were you still stationary or was it a classic u-turn incident? Just trying to think of how the rest of us could avoid the same accident.

The good news is 80% of your wage is paid by ACC after the first week (or maybe after the second). You'd have done all the main forms when admitted so you just need to call ACC. Of course if you're not working that doesn't help so much but it'd stop you having to go to interview skills shit with WINZ

So true. I broke my shoulder at easter mountain biking. I've only got about 80% movement back now but I have all the movement I need to ride. How often to you lift your right arm over your head while riding anyway...? Was lucky it wasn't a snap off like delusionz's so I could ride again in ~6 weeks.

delusionz, get your arse into physio as soon as the Dr's tell you it's safe. It'll be almost entirely paid for by ACC and makes a heap of difference. I didn't this time which is why I still don't have full movement 4 months later.

An all too familiar thread it seems! Farking cager *unts!!!

I know exactly how you feel dude. Im still on ACC from an accident a little over two months ago, similar scenario except I was doing 80 odd Km/h (in a 100Km/h zone) when the silly tart (18yrs old licensed for 6 months) pulled out in front of me. Smashed me up pretty good, 9 pins & a steel plate in my hip for life! Not to mention the dislocating my thumb & fucking up my finger before flying 20 feet over her bonnet landing on my head (helmet)

So good news is ACC will look after you, the kicker is it's 80% of your last months income (& less tax as well of course) so it actually ends up being 60% of your gross income if your on 19.5% tax rate. Also time off is irrelevant, just exactly what you got paid is what its based off. Then it will be 80% of your past 12 months income as long as it was with the same company. Plus all physio, doc's etc are covered, you pay first then claim it back.

On the bike front. My bike was an SR250, completely written off it was. So what did I do? I went out & bought a 135BHP death machine

    God I love my RF

Fuck em I say, don't let these crazy cagers get to you. I actually feel safer on a bigger more powerful bike to be honest.

Big bike = easier to be seen

Big bike = easier to pull away from trouble

Big bike = louder so harder to ignore (with aftermarket can)

Big bike = needs a rider with discipline

ps: last but not least. The silly tart that pulled out on me went to court & got nailed for careless driving causing injury, fined $750 + $130 court costs

PLUS got ordered to pay me $1000 for emotional damage.

My advice, go sit in on the proceedings, this can only add weight to your side (crutches n all & let out the odd wince of pain, it's gotta add another $500 or so to the bill)
To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and to endure the betrayal of false friends. To appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition; to know that even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded

Up until recently I would have tended to agree with you.....a recent discussion between me and another U turning driver has forced me to change my mind!
I'm a fairly good rider (ok, a nana at cornering) and have been on bikes for 30 odd years in auckland but my incident was completely unseen and a little surprising. With hindsight, even with better scanning I doubt I would have anticipated it, so don't rely on your experience, accidents tend to be a little unanticipated.

Delusionz, get well and don't let some pain put you off the good things in life, most good things seem to have some discomfort attached somewhere I've found!

    Look after yourself.

nah i wasn't stationary, yes it could have been avoided on my part (i only wanted starburst snakes n a bag of chips from foodtown, i could have just continued onto mobil where i needed to fill up neways) but eh hindsight is a bitch and either way it wasn't expected, if i ever saw a brake light or indicator from her behind i would have let her into the median first, but as far as i could tell she was going straight and then suddenly when she was beside me i felt the thud, i started flying, and it was all over... it happened in an instant.... anyways... getting out today, after my arm is re slinged and leg recasted... my shoulder bone might rott or it might heal will find out in a few months!

delusionz, I am so sorry to hear about your accident. Has the car driver visited you in hospital or apologised to you (and hopefully made noises about learning to look for bikes...)?

[QUOTE=delusionz;1181348]theres a chance my shoulder will never be put right .. just have to wait and see how it heals.

I don't know if this is helpful (it's intended to be!) but here is what I learned after recovering from spinal surgery several years ago (nothing to do with bikes; I had a rock-climbing accident) and also from having seen my partner go through major surgery on both knees at once:

It is possible to make a better recovery than doctors predict. Especially if you insist that you want nothing less than total recovery. The most important thing I learned from my surgery was that nobody cares more about my back than me. Doctors and other specialists want to help you and many are good but some are not that good and, in the end, it comes down to you taking charge.

Don't accept any limitations on what you can achieve. Get second and third opinions even if you have to borrow the money to pay for them. Yes you need to do some waiting while things heals but there are also probably things you can do to help the healing. Enlist your friends and family in helping you stay motivated and reminding you that you can do it, especially during the times you lose sight of that.

I'm not saying you are not already doing these things, nor that your doctors aren't good, I'm just stressing how important they are and that your own determination can get you a long, long way.

    Good luck.

    cheers kaz,

thanks everyone, the amount of support and wellwishing i've received has been amazing, from KB, close friends, my old man... and after reading of other tragedies in this thread it makes mine sound like a mosquito bite!

    Heal well delusionz.

My lady suffered a similar fate, she spent almost 16 weeks in hospital with 12 broken bones, her left shoulder was in 16 peices.

She still likes bikes but is not riding at the moment and may not be able to due to her shoulder. Take the time to heal well and consider why it is you ride bikes.

It is often the realisation that a biker is so vunerable to the car driver "not seeing them" no matter what you do yourself that can bring thoughts of abandoning bikes. It is something that you will either accept and continue riding or decide it is not for you.

Hopefully everything heals and you can continue.
If you can't be good, be good at it
