Dusty Butt 1000km - We knocked the bugger off what next?
Today I went and did a bit more of the ride closer to Raglan. Everything up that way is sweet, and I checked out the Accom while I was there.
I have tried a few other roads which may or may not tie in to this ride. The old Kawhia road has quite a slip on it,(been there about two years) and I don't think they plan to fix it as there is an alternate route, and the ground base looks very soft, and unstable.
I was going to try and get the Scrambler through by myself, but I erred on the side of caution, as there is little room for error, and the stream 12mtrs down isn't very inviting. However, a few helpers just to get it up through the soft bit, and it should be no worries.
Few pix from to day.
Pic 1 Eel Hotel. On the way into Bridal Veil Falls.
Pic 2 55Mtr Bridal Veil Falls.
Pic 3 Stroll in the ferns.
Pic 4 DOC workers who have good taste.(Buggers have fenced off Ruapuke Bch access however).
So from the falls, I shot through Waimaori rd. Hope to include this road, as it flows nicely. Then through to Ruapuke Bch, where I found DOCs new wire cable fence. Can't complain, as the dunes are in good nick now, and migrating birds have started nesting in there.
A quick thrash around the seaward side of Mt Karioi, into Raglan for a snack, and fuel and then back around Karioi on the East side.
Pic 1 Looks minor, but the entry, and exit points are narrow and soft. Too scared to do it by myself.
Pic 2 Not the most inviting area to end up in.
Pic 3 Ruapuke just waiting to be carved up.
Pic 4 Curses. It goes a long way to.
And the last few from the west side of Mt Karioi.
Pic 1 At least Doc has built a nice viewing platform near Te Roto.
Pic 2 View towards Port Waikato, from the platform.
pic 3 Manu Bay was quiet. Few surfers hungry for a wave.
Pic 4 View over Raglan from the western rd, Te Hutewai Rd.
You can get around the slip on the Bridal Veil Falls side of the Kawhia Rd by crossing the farm and stream.....the locals do it.
This is how I did it last year....

Hey Motu, long time, no hear. Good to see your still about.
Yep, I saw the stream, but after the recent rain I was pretty sure the Trumpy would have gone "submarine" on me, and its a heavy slug to deal with. (was thinking lately of something like your Dt, or even a cheap Chinese beast to drag abound the region).
Hope you get a chance to do some rides this summer, I'd like to finally meet you.![]()
Hi Motu, I was out riding with marks today and he came on his son's DT230 as per this thread http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/sh...ad.php?t=59259
When are you going to have time to rebuild yours so you can get back into the fun again like you did in that story from last year?
tri boy you certainly had good weather for your ride looks just a wee bit better than we experienced today but we had fun all the same.
Cheers
Merv
I'll see if the parts have been ordered for the DT230 tomorrow...if Junior isn't sleeping off a night attending the derailing. You should of heard it man....I was just dropping off to sleep when it happened,I knew something big had gone down but didn't know what.
I'll be out running in the XT621 some time on the weekend.....might go down to Oparau....
Motu is Junior your son and is he a railway fellah?
Cheers
Merv
No! He's the parts guy in the bike shop....and also a volunteer.....the siren went a couple of minutes after the derailment. They would of been on duty most of the night.
All looks good Triboy, I have been to Raglan before but never round Kawhia etc so am really looking forward to the ride.
Bump.
3 weeks to go before I confirm numbers with the Awakino Hotel, and Sunset Bach in Raglan. Check the calender for 30/11.![]()
