What huts are you thinking of? There used to be the number 1 hut at Lake Taylor and the number 2 hut near the top of Lake Sumner, but they both got burnt down a few years ago now. There's the Hurunui hut about 2 km west of where the number 2 used to be, and you could ride to it, but as TA said that wouldn't be the thing to do since it's on a walking only track.

No signs at either end when I was last on it about 3 years ago.

Basically you can legaly ride the Chch side but I dont think you would be very popular ... I wouldn't recommend riding it (even though we can) as there are better places to get you kicks.
It was probably all you "old fullers" ripping it up that forced the Lyttleton Side change in the first place

No signs on their recently. I just rode it very quietly so as not to upset anyone, but still got a few dirty looks.

Me too, one of my ancestors arrived on one of the first four ships - I can't remember which ship though, I've got it written down somewhere.

Yep, the track used to be really rough and there was hardly ever any walkers on it. It's all flash now - nice and smooth and wide, which is why I took it nice and easy last time. It was more of a nostalgia ride than a challange, in fact I was disappointed at what they've done to it. It used to be fun ripping up there on the TS185. There's a few other places around town that a group of us used to ride too, but now they're all full of houses.
The views expressed above may not match yours - But that's the reason my Dad went to war - wasn't it?
Life's journey is not to arrive at the grave safely in a well preserved body, .... but rather to skid in sideways, totally worn out,... shouting "man, what a ride"!!!
