Where to start in Mx?

After going to several trail rides -usually at woodhill and the occasional one down south- and having a go at the gncc last year on a crf70 my lad has got the two stroke bug and wants to go mxing after I got him a a little 80 stroker. I was thinking of joining a club. Ardmore is the is closest track but I didn't think they have a "club" as such? correct me if I am wrong. Also due to work commitments its a no go on wednesdays - the practice day and sundays are always race days. A bit full on for him at first. He wants/needs to do some practicing somewhere on a saturday/sunday. Although we haven't been down to kimmies or thunderx yet. Would these tracks be good for him to practice on? I am would also like him to get some coachng as I know bugger all about mxing - scares me to death the way the pros come off those jumps about 20 foot in the air. He seems to have the "no fear" factor flat out everywhere lol. Any suggestions?

try driving up to woodhill bike park - it might take an hour from howick but it's well worth it
it's sand based so run on flat tyres or you'll be all over the place, but the advantage is that if it's wet is actually gets better rather than muddy. they're also builing a mx track. (if you just went to the family day rides i suppose you may not have been to the park)

if your boy can do well on sand he's set. there is often family days in the forest and plenty of mx series and minimx around too

Thanks motorc. Yep we've done the woodhill stuff and I think we've been to every greg power run family day in the past year as well as the WMCC ones at woodhill. BUT that isn't MX. Where they all start together and race around as a pack! or take off 20' in the air on the jumps. We had a go at McEwans MX track in Taupo in JULY while we were on holiday down there. I eventually scared myself on the main track ( on the DAM jump going over the bars) so went round with all the kids on the minis track ! My son loved it. Admittedly he was only bt himself. What I don't want is my lad to be frightenend off which if you read reckless post on the ' mercer slater park thread' regarding his experience at Harrissville, happened to his lad. that is : getting knocked off or ending up in a pile up on some corner and getting seriously injured. I know to a certain degree that's the chance you take getting your kids into MX but I want to give him the chance to enjoy it as safely as possible until he's got enough confidence and experience not to give up just because he got injured. We are thinking of joining Pukekehoe MCC as that sounds like its got a junior racing for novices. It has also produced two world champs!!!Then we will nave a go at ardmore.

I'm looking at clubs as well. I'm actually leaving for Harrisville practice day in about 15 mins. Just me at this stage my boys are busy. I'll let you know how I found it. I sneak out to Armore nearly every Wednesday afternoon as well its real close and 15 bucks, great way to ease the pressure.

Hey mate take the little guy to Fells farm motocross its on the 1st of
october and it has a kids class, the track is wide and the jumps are safe,
table tops only, only $20 to enter and you dont need to be part of a club.
proper gate start and all, really well organized event.

Check out the rmcc website, heaps of info and a really friendly club to get into mx with.

to be honest with you A&R, Ardmore is the place to start if you are a novice. The jumps are way smaller, and and less plentifull. The track is still a bundle of fun, especially straight after being harrowed (full throttle then), and is probably the best track around to learn how to ride ruts. I reckon after a year at Ardmore you can progress to the Harrisville jumps which require a lot more speed and precision. It is a national grade after all

Or RMCC which is all natural terain, so only safe natural jumps
