    reserve tank issue (Cock thing)

So - I was happily trundling along today, when I ran out of gas. I reached down and twisted my cock, and got about 1200 more metres out of the tank. The tank was as dry as a bone... Surprised that Firestormer hasn't already flamed me for running out of gas as I had to push it to the Shell station near him, but hey!

Now - I was expecting that I should get more than 1.2 k from a reserve (around 10 was what I was looking for...)

Is there any reason that might change the behaviour of my cock?

That seems pretty low. Normally I would expect at lest 20km probably more like 30-40km.

What would be the point of flaming you? If you'd run out of gas, there'd be no satisfying "WHooOOMPF!!", would there?

    D'ya want a serious answer?
Are you sure you turned it to "Reserve"?
Maybe the pipes in the cock that govern this sort of thing have been cocked up.
No, Seriously - the petcock (don't do too much petting of the cock or you'll go blind and fall off) has two tubes in it of differing heights. The longer one is supposed to be the "On" one, and when the fuel level gets below the top of the filter holes in that, the fuel flow stops. The reserve one is shorter, and the filter holes in that allow fuel through all the way to empty.
If, somewhere along the way, these have been monkeyed around with (becoming monkey cocks?) the fuel flow won't be as expected. Can't think of any other reason for this perverse behaviour...
    ... and that's what I think.

    Or summat.

    Or maybe not...

    Dunno really....

The reserve on my bike lasts a lot longer. But I always notice how rough the engine runs on all the sludge that sits at the bottom of the tank and it takes another tank of gas to clear the rubbish out of the carbs before smoothness returns. So are you sure that you actually ran out of gaas or did the lower fuel feed just clog up faster?

No, it's just happening an hour later than before you left.

Are you advocating twiddling one's cock on a regular basis to keep the pipes clear of sludgy build-ups, then?

It's not hard to do, but as the petcock needs to be removed, you need to either have the tank empty (or nearly empty), or be able to lift it so's the petcock's at the highest point or at least clear of the fuel. I've found the easiest way to work on things like this is to wait till the tank's almost empty, remove it, then place it on an old bedspread I have in the gargre to support it and stop it getting scratched.

Man - I put a full tank in and she just PURRS along... weird... I know that I got 253k out of the bike before dryness hit, but still I wasn't expecting no reserve... Have to have a look on Thursday I think!

EDIT: or not, seeing as it'll be about 2 weeks before I next have an empty tank... Hmmm - anyone got a manual for a Yamaha VTwin 1996 about? Oh - and someone's gonna have to show me how to get to my battery... :-) I'm a newbie I'm a newbie *does the newbie dance*

Yeah, I found that too, with my VFR. It's a bastid, that is.
Nice bike, by the way! That "Granite Blue Metallic" is the best colour.
If you take the fuel selector thingo and/or its cables off the VFR, make sure it's replaced the same way. I had a hell of a job sorting it out...

Oh yeah - and can you keep that JRandom under control, please? Give him a quick whack with your helmet on the side of his head, or summat.
