ZXR250 was my first ton, on the way to an indicated 210 (*cough* yeah, right). 1993 I think.

1971 on a '69 BSA Lightning. No helmet, glasses or goggles,no gloves, cotton work shirt with the sleeves rolled up and sneakers. You couldn't buy Levi's in those days so had on some Wranglers....so at least my legs were safe.At that speed my eyes started to water,so took my left hand off the bars to wipe my eyes - and my arm was ripped off the bars and was flapping behind my back! Hadn't realised the strength of the wind at that speed.Got into a slight speed wobble but it was no problem.
I've ridden a lot of bikes over the eons, but never been interested in outright speed - you could count the times I've been over the ton on my digits without removing my socks.Going too fast around a corner is more exciting than doing some specified speed on a safe straight piece of road.
bout 1986 down hill on the big dipper between tauranga and katikati,
on my loyal 1981 DR500s-fuck i miss that bike.![]()
I tonned for the first time on an RD250LC back in 1983. Or mebbe I dreamed the whole thing?![]()

the DEAD forum for politically incorrect Sportbike riders!
I was on a CBX400F back in 1987 down the Takanini Straight (was closed off for my record attempt of course.....)
"...you meet the weirdest people riding a Guzzi !!..."
Would have been late 2003, on a ZXR250C that didn't belong to me, topping out at an indicated 195kph alongside a Subaru WRX between Lincoln Rd and Royal Rd on the northwestern motorway.
I was young and foolish, and the long-suffering Auckland bike shop involved shall remain nameless.

1964 on a Triumph Thunderbird 650![]()
'Bout '75 on the old '73 T500 Suzuki! Was my second bike after the B31 BSA which would achieve 72mph with me laying flat on the tank!
The T500 was a revelation! 5th was an overdrive and it would do 105mph in 5th or 112mph in 4th, indicated. First time I accelerated hard I had difficulty getting my feet back up on the pegs! It was as fast as a Ferrari over the quarter at the time and not far behind the Kwaka 750 tripple!
For the young ones, 100mph, the old 'ton' is 160km/h.
You don't get to be an old dog without learning a few tricks.
Shorai Powersports batteries are very trick!
Motu, nice to hear from you again mate. How's it going in twin towers land and have you been getting out on the gravel?
Cheers
Merv
In 1975 on a 1973 Yamaha RD350. Next question, when did you first do the ton on the gravel? A week later in 1975, same bike. I was 15 in 1975. Fastest I have ever ridden on any bike was on a Hayabusa, indicating off the clock at 300KPH. That was last year.
If you love it, let it go. If it comes back to you, you've just high-sided!

Not long after I purchased my 750cc Norton Atlas in the mid 70’s. I may well have exceeded 100mph on various other machines but they usually didn’t have anything approaching a functional speedometer. I remember swapping it with a mate who had a 72/73 T120V and he came back with his eyes bugging out. He had mis counted the gears (it only had 4 fer gawds sake) and thought he had tapped it out in top at 105mph on the clock and found he was in 3rd (gaH! My poor bike)
I kinda realized then that the Norton (that was always sold as a touring bike – the 650SS was the sports machine) had some serious speed potential. That day I definitely exceeded 100mph and later, after spending a house deposit on the engine and gearing up, clip ons, rear sets, half the weight removed, small fairing (fell to bits) it managed 129mph (timed) which impressed the heck out of me at the time…
The engine imploded a month later….
I saved the cases etc and rebuilt it std with low compression pistons but the nice head / carb set up and it was still a bloody quick bike once it was wound up. It could not live with the big two strokes on acceleration but once you hit 75mph it was a different story. The Norton kept going and would reel em in. I rode it for around 100,000 miles around NZ over 5 years and it had 190,000 miles on the papers when I sold it… I miss that bike – it was a nice piece of kit.
