Trouble starting FXR150

Hi There.
I've got a 2000 FXR150 and I'm having trouble getting it to start after it's been sitting for several hours. When it's warmed up and recently switched off there is no problem at all using either the electric start or kickstart.
I think my battery is screwed a bit, because it can only electric start after I've been riding for a while (not charging properly?)
However, it takes a lot of kicks to get it started first thing. I've tried it with and without the choke, and remember to turn the fuel off when stopping.

Not sure if it's related or not, but when it's going there seems to be trouble idling - without some choke it'll slowly loose revs before stalling.

Absolutely the best advice before you do anything else. Also when you've done this, when was the last time your bike was serviced? New plugs ,leads etc?

As per above, but the idle problem might be from being too lean around idle, as the duty of the choke is to richen the mixture around idle. Sounds a wee bit strange if you haven't been messing with the carb, as they are set pretty good from the factory.

I found the best way to start my old one was full choke and no throttle.

i had a similar issue with mine and it was due to air being let in around where the choke cable enters the engine.. test the batt get a new one if you need it then take it to get a service
FXRs can be very temperamental on the occasion

As others have said, get the battery sorted and then take a look at the sparkplug. Because theres only one it makes a huge difference to the running of your bike. I had major issues starting my old FXR, so I got a new plug and it made a world of difference

Generally speaking, a bike needs a much richer mixture to start when cold. So the choke may be playing up. It may also be down on compression, have a dodgy spark plug or if it has been left standing for a long time the fuel may be stale. Very hard to diagnose, particularly with a dodgy battery, so as others have commented, get that sorted first. Then another $8 on a spark plug, before looking further. (Get the bike shop to gap the plug correctly for you. )

Only just bought the bike (only been riding for 5 days!) so should get it serviced anyways.

Agree with Paul .. I had an FXR and only had trouble when it was sitting for a couple of weeks ... it had a trickle charger to help with this problem.
