Bought a new bike

Got a 2nd bike so the wife can learn on mine, and we can go on rides together. Rode it back from tuakau, knobblies on the rear and speedo and rev counter not working. Still, I'm not upset, it only cost me $900 dollars.


Its a 1986 yamaha xs250, weighs a tonne, but was following the wife home, and she reckons it was doing about 140 when it passed her, so it has a bit of go.

Good news. Hope you have fun.. stick to the speed limit though man.. don't end up as a statistic. And either one of you would miss the other if you should meet your end on a bike.

It goes fairly fast, but has bugger all torque down low. It wont be winning any drag races. Im finding it really different riding a parallel twin as opposed to my single, and I definately prefer the single. I guess its a good learning curve having to rely on my brakes a lot more as opposed to engine braking.
I'm only keeping this bike for six months till I can sit my full, so the lack of performance doesnt really bother me, and I will still predominantly be using the SRX, unless my wife and I are both out riding together, in which case I will be on the XS.

Helped a mate restore a 400cc version, he loved it, I had a CB400T back then. Just a thing to remember though, the speed quoted above is loss of licience material, so ride safe out there bro.

Dont worry about my speed, I'm generally pretty nana-ish. It was only because I'd just bought it and was double checking that I hadnt got a lemon. I'm pretty content to stick to reasonable speeds ie speedlimit+10ks.

Not that I'd have any idea, of course, even as a fellow NZ250 owner...

.... but word is on the street that you can get an NZ250 to 160km/h, you just have to be a little bit mean to it to get it there. Like I said though, wouldn't have any idea personally

My 88 SR250 would do 140 flatout (downhill) lol...........well it did, until it was written off
