Trademe have had dot rated German Helmets listed at times. The current ones listed are not DOT. Keep an eye on the listings is your best bet to get one.
I have work associates who wear them and are no different to wearing an open face or shorty helmet. Each to their own I say.![]()

Not recommended, you only get one head.
If you must, better you find one rated AS1698, NZ5430, or BS6658.
I could show you a few photos from some motorcycle accidents that would make you rush out and get a fullface. I can dig up a few if you think you can stomach them- ToyCollector was going to get an openface to match his CB750, the mere description of these pictures changed his mind pretty rapidly.
Think... guy's face hanging off - litterally, teeth all over the place, from his eyes down to his neck is prettymuch gone. And the kicker is that he's still conscious and on the operating table. Get yourself a fullface :].
Anyone got any pics of their bins where they've stratched up the front of their lid? That might serve as a less graphic reminder of the importance of a fullface.
Wear QUASiMOTO !
Old Boat-Bailer lids

I wear a shorty 'CHIPS" type helmet a bit - I guess it is not as safe as a full-face.....
I also ride a motorbike a bit - I guess it is not as safe as a car.....
Each to their own.

Look it's your own decision, but in my last accident I was highsided and landed head/shoulder first on the motorway. My helmet was flattened on the right hand side, the chin bar was cracked, and the visor was gouged.
I was wearing a decent full face and I still have my nose, chin, teeth, etc. I wasn't speeding, or trying to split lanes. Just clipped behind by a car that didn't notice my indicators were on, and that I was in fact in the lane in front of him.
By all means get a novelty helmet, but just be aware that it's not going to give you the same level of protection.
I do wear an open face helmet occasionally when lumpy lumping around the village on the classic Trumpy on a nice day, heading off down the beach fer a coffee or testing a bike (again, around the village) and in fact I plan on buying a new one soon for this reason.
But! It will definately NOT be a WW2 German Army one... Your choice but I find it odd that we can celebrate ANZAC day on one hand and casually rub these symbols into the faces of old diggers with the other... Not for me thanks, they were adopted by 'gangs' to shock people and while their use has become main stream and novelty - it's not for me...
