Followed a guy on a VFR800 yesterday from Woodville to Waipukarau. I suspected he had a detector, so let him lead. Coming into Dannevirke I could see the red light reflecting in his mirrors. Looks like it'd be pretty effective. I'd prefer it to ear plug because I ride with fitted ear plugs anyway, and normal audio earplugs don't really fit my ears.

    Light > plug.

Umm no you cant ignore things in your peripheral vision...... I can make you blink every time I shove a hand etc in you peripheral vision as it is a self defence mechanism......... but you obviously can ,,,,,

Thats not what I meant by "ignore". Why would I want to ignore it in the first place? It's saving me money. I meant that if I'm coming through a tight corner and there are cars passing me etc in the opposite lane, I can concentrate more on getting by the cars safely, then focus on the radar warning (prioritize). safety > anything else is my point. ie. the light doesn't startle me.

But surely you are entitled to your own opinion. Sweet as...

That looks like a good option too.
I wear moulded earplugs which I recently got when I was in Rotorua, from Plugs 4 Lugs. They work so well, I would rather not interfere with them, although I know they do offer plugs with a speaker system in them, that may well be able to be adapted.

I was talking to a guy today that had a simple mono ear plug/speaker with volume control which was on the wiring to the plug, which he bought cheaply from Dick Smith. He just has the speaker set up in his helmet and adjusts the volume depending on where he is riding. He said he had got used to being attached to his detector by a wire, and didn't find it that much of a hassle. Simple but effective I guess.

Why the screamer appeals as an option is that even with good ear plugs, you can still hear a screamer going off apparently, and can switch it from city to hiway, as well as mute.
However, the HARD system would be just as effective I guess.
    Cheers,
    Grant.

I wear ear plugs too (just the cheap squishy ones though). I jam the plug in and then sit the little ear bud thingy on top of the plug then pull my helmet on.
It's remarkable how well I can still hear the sound from the ear bud even when the ear plug is in.

I am planning to get a detector very soon for the Gixxer. I am favouring the screamer-because it is more simple, and hard wired in. I assume no extra battery concerns as you would with the HARD? Does the HARD require any helmet mods and is it easily transferable between helmets?. I figure the screamer setup is there, on the bike, just switch on and go-less to remember, less to go wrong. It wont go off in your ear because it is tucked under the fairing, but I can see the "startle" potential, esp if you are focussed in a corner or whatever. I am a bit of a luddite though!!!

The LED is nice and bright for the daytime but make sure you point it away from your face at night because it will blind you. Even with it pointed away its still a bit too bright at night. Also they eat batterys and cost about $3 a battery and you need 2.

Physiologically, you don't react as quickly to a visual cue as an audible one but in practice, I don't know what the difference is. All I know is when my screamer sounds off, I just about s**t myself and react pretty darned fast! Refer to: http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/sh...ad.php?t=37827 for screamer review.

I'm still looking for the perfect solution to the detector warning problem.

Currently I'm using a mono earphone with a clip that goes behind the ear to hold it in place. It's a Radio Shack item retailed by Dick Smith.

True it can be a a pain in the arse at times, the cord flaps around and if I start waving my arms around I can inadvertently try to tug it out of my ear. Then again it cost the princely sum of $9.99.

I've got the HARD system. The upside is there's is no way you can miss it. The down side is that it's a bit fiddly (turning in on /off) and it uses batteries. Also, the transmitter fouls if it gets wet.

    We'll be in Wellington....

....... on January 8th, on our way to Ruapuna, if you wish to catch up and check out what Gizzit is talking about. Our custom made earplugs would be far more comfortable than jamming stuff into your ears. Cheers Sue

Screamer works well, is water and impact proof and can be heard at thrice the speed limit. No wires, no light in your eyeball giving you the shits at night. kids love it, etc.

Do you still hear it if you have ear plugs in?
