i never bother turning it off, its fun to go past a hp car with it screaming away... they can hear it for sure

Similar to a smoke alarm, not quite as piercing, same type of speaker.
Different tones depending on band etc

Just a "heads up" for those wishing to buy a Screamer ..... you do need to buy the right Screamer for your detector. I know that the Bell STI (Bell XR) has a special model just for it. Check you are getting the right one for your detector.
