I have friends coming out in November for a NZ tour - a week of which will be on a rented bike. They love their gadgets and have a Garmin Zumo 550 model (whatever that is) - anyone got a 'back up of the nz software?

Sorry "no" on the software, but the ZUMO is a very cool motorbike specific GPS unit. i wonted on but cant afford the $1500 that they cost in NZ. i did get the NAVMAN S90i, which leads me to hopfully a mutual point of interst. Dose any one have some great things to go and see on a bike or a road trip that just has to be done on a bike??
There's an opensource map project. It's pretty good!

What's the Navman S90i sell for in NZ?
Are you taking any prescription medication? [Rain Man]
Garmin Zumo 550 rocks.
Santa droped one off at my place this year.
NZ maps is hard to rip off, but you can get free opensource stuff off the net to use.
Can also use google earth I believe
Arguing with an Engineer is like wrestling a pig in mud.
After a while you realise the pig is enjoying it.
I use these maps on my Garmin Legend and they are great. They are autorouting capable and the map set includes a reasonably comprehensive points of interest (POI) file.
I only found one glitch in the map while touring the North Island over Christmas and that was between Taumaranui and Te Kuiti. The autorouting tried to divert me onto a (gravel) side road as it didn't seem to believe the state highway was continuous at that point!
Try Brent's maps, much better priced than the Garmin:

yep super cool thing is to export your garmin trip log into google earth and push the play button. You can then "fly" down the route you took.
A friend of mine was a convoy navigator in Iraq and used this feature as part of his convoy briefing.
Or make a route and fly down it. Then you can stay home because you have already been there.
