Ok... Here is what makes me sooooooooooooooo damn angry!

I got my car stereo pinched from my 2 week old car last wednesday. $2000 worth. The little bastards left all my cds. cheers guys!

Cops dont want to know unless one of the little pricks kindly left a blood sample in the car. No one came out to finger print the inside: A brand new dash surround. Recently polished by yours truly! Kindly left on the drivers seat by the thieves covered in prints.

1. If the cops dont finger print the vehicle how will they link one break in to the next.
2. On the news tonight they were talking about how much they are doing to crack down on car thieves and crime in general.

Driving down a 3 lane wellington motorway on a fine sunny day, literally NO other cars around for 500m and im doing 130kmh for only about 20 seconds. I get a $300 ticket! - Catching one car thief would save heaps more $$$ in insurance premiums, would give the cops less work to do but hey my $300 probably helps catch some violent offender so it cant be all bad.

Cops do a great job! I take my hat of to them. I'm ex Army and would love to be a cop but I get paid too much now to make the switch.

I'll do my dective work and catch them selling my gear on trademe then I'll probably get arrested for teaching these guys a very very HARD lesson!

cops finger printed my car as there was a huge fuck off print on the window where the toe rag pulled off my radar detector (left unattended for 15 minutes).

the cop lady didnt have the right kit to take my prints to make sure it wasn't mine (part of the process). said she'd come back and see me. two weeks later i rang up asked if i should go in. No no no i'll call back in soon. rinse. repeat. give up....

unless the guys trapped in the boot i wouldnt hold ya breath

That is normal. Unless one of the scum discovers god (ifi t was up to me, I would make the introuction persanl, if you know what i mean) the cops will never do anything. In our family, we have had over 10 breakins - cars and houses. Cops have never once turned up, never investigated and never even bothered to try and solve the crime. When I had $12,000 of dive gear and tools stolen, I had to drive to the police station and they only took prints (half hartedly) because I sort of knew one of the cops there then, through motorcycles. ANother time ($800 of stuff taken and a $350 window broken), they were quite honest that nothing woudl be done, and the form filling was only for insurance purposes. Other times I haven't bothered to report it since there was not going to be an insurance claim. No wonder crime is dropping...
and they wonder why the cops get no support - loyalty cuts 2 ways. Since they decided to merge with the IRD, like tax collectors, I wouldn't piss on 'em if they were on fire.

Always report it so the crime figures look accurate and maybe something might get done.

but if you listen to labour today the reason for increased violent crime is because more people are reporting it so they are obviously doing their job right..... bahahaha thats funny shit

I more or less gave up on expensive car audio because of theift. I used to have a system worth around 5k, but have reduced it to a basic set up because I've had a car stolen.

What shits me more is that becuase I've had a few speeding tickets and someone nicked MY car the insurance companies treat me like I'm some kind of criminal. Fucking shits me.

at least the cops have enough time to set up a sting operation to catch me riding while suspended - at least they have got there prioitys right. the world is a MUCH safter place now and joe the thief can sleep easy becuase the cops are after traffic guys.

My humble opinion.
The best deterrent to crime is the certainty of getting caught.
The cops (or their superiors) send a clear signal to the perps that they are NOT going to get caught. So where's the deterrent?

Small time crim gets away with a little crime here and there then learns that crime pays and moves on to bigger and more lucritave crimes. If you want to get serious on crime, don't you stop it where it starts? Take the small stuff seriously and there will be less of the big stuff.

Though I can see why the govt doesn't want to get serious on crime. It doesn't pay to lock up your voters does it?

At this juncture only way a burglar is going to get caught is if he is silly enough to speed from the scene.

You can kiss your goods (and probably your arse) goodbye, sorry to say that. Petty theft (and while I don't consider a 2000-buck stereo, or car to be petty theft the cops do) is rife. A mate of mine got ripped off recently (North Shore location) and they took everything including the washing machine full of clothes. You name it, they took it. Cops reaction? "Get over it, move on". Much more than 2g's went walkabout that day, for sure.

As much as I'd love to rip into another "cop bashing" thread I think the cops are up against it; they get no support from the courts and 'wet bus ticket' sentences are the norm. The cops have developed a full dose of the 'fuckits' coz if they nail some turd they get criticized and if they don't nail some turd, they get criticized. Not a job I'd do.

Sure, they have some scumbags (and at least one Scumdog) in their midst and a fistful of inexperienced megalomaniacs to boot (sic) but in the long run they can't be everywhere at all times. You're on your own in the real world and I insure against petty thieves, I have some well placed items in the home for added insurance as well. I'll use them if required and take my chances tomorrow in court.

I don't know the circumstances of the theft of your stereo but FWIW we never leave our favourite car out at night (we have a jappa for movies etc) and don't leave things in sight, like wallets, phones, CD collections etc.

I've been ripped off and it ain't nice. My sympathy to you. You can minimise the turd's opportunities but you can never fully insulate yourself.

Here is the police report number for your insurance; Hmmmm, 800 dollars worth of gear taken... 500 dollar excess... loose 50% no claims bonus. No insurance claim made. No report to police in the future. But the crime stats look better!!! hey hey, we doing good!

Well, Police have a virtual monopoly on crime investigation.

It could be said thats it would be the perfect business, except for the customers.

You pay for the police even if they don't perform - so what is the incentive for performance ?

What if instead of being a government department, policing was like plumbing. So, you get an apprenticeship or go to university.

You pass the tests and you qualify as a "law enforcement professional"

So when a car get broken into, you call the police. If they can't attend, you can go through the yellow pages and find a professional to investigate your crime.

Hmm. Now the customer is important.

(Of course you can do that now, but you have already paid for the non attending policeman. He's busy making sure a boy raccers car is 4" off the ground)

But in my scheme, the law enforcement contactor sends the bill to the police department.

It just seems strange to me that

- there are never enough cops to go to a burglary
- but so many show up to a car chase that US police still use helicopter footage of Auckland Police doing a chase as the Keystone Cop feature at the annual conference

- They want to fingerprint you at the side of the road
- but seldom take fingerprints at a car break-in or burglary

- They need guns and tasers to protect themselves
- But are always last to the crime scene, Joe Public, or the private Security Guard was there hours earlier

- They can make speeding safe by turning on a blue light
- But no amount of training could make a private contractor capable of going to that RAID alarm or Burglar alarm faster than the speed limit (even though the police wont attend it till private contractors confirm its real.)

The reality is, that police are special and they like it that way.

When they hear that their home alarm is going, they will turn on their lights and attend at speed. When yours goes, they will ticket the the private guard if he breaks the limit.

Cos Joe Public aint special, possibly not even particularly important.
