ZR7 and GSX750Y are very similar bikes. ZR7 engine is an even older design than the GSX and peak HP is about 10HP less than the GSX (ZR7 - 75HP, GSX 86 HP). However, low and mid-range power are very similar. Both weigh 200kg (dry).
ZR7 has more modern styling and has a single shock verses GSX's twin shocks (doesn't necessarily work any better though). Kawasaki upgraded the ZR7 in 2004/5? to the Z750, which features a liquid cooled, fuel injected 100+HP engine, upsided-down forks (I think), and a bunch of other goodies.
Biggest practical difference between the ZR7 and GSX is probably fuel capacity - ZR7 is 22 litres verses GSX @ 18 litres. There is also a semi-faired version of the ZR7.

So given what I use the bike for do you think it will do the job,I do enjoy my early morning weekends fangs with the wee bandit so easy to throw around through the twisties, what I dont like is the lack of torque on the mudane commute to work, something with a bit more grunt down low would be great, but I dont want to be stuck with a fat unexicting slug for the weekend.
Am I asking to much here or looking at totally the wrong sort of bike?
Max budget about 10g
and you're looking at inline fours? methinks you've just made a case for a torquey twin or even a big single. There was a Ducati Monster amongst the bikes I looked at on tradeMe; now THAT is a bike with "a bit more grunt down low" and certainly not the "fat unexicting slug" that suzuki looks to be.
There was also a KTM Supermoto; a bike that'll happily dust off any sport bike in the twisties given equal riding ability.
Me thinks I need to test ride a few..cheers for the help guys
that's the attitude!
test ride with an open mind. ride singles, twins, triples and fours. ride jappas and euros, ride 500's, 600's, 750's, 900's and litre bikes.
use em all on the same bit of road you enjoy the best and after you've whittled the choice down to a few; ride them again back to back on the same road and the same day.
i started off with jappa 2 strokes, moved to MX for a long time then to jappa 4's for ages before I started to realise that, on the road, high revving 4's were slower in the fun bits (for me) than torquey twins and singles. My current bike doesn't even have a tacho and it doesn't need one. Just open the throttle at any speed and it gets up and hauls.
ha! ha! yeah! i've been waiting for someone to make that comment and fair enough too. I reckon most jappa sportbikes are boring, they all look like toyota corollas (universal japanese design) with only the paint jobs to distinguish one from the other.
mind you, side by side i'd take the looks of the moto over that ugly zooki any day
I sold my MINT '07 ZX10 SE with mod's (176RWHP) to get the Superduke R.
There is NO comparison when it comes to the corners and PLENTY of balls when required.
Fun? The word doesn't even come close! I'm forever laughing my head off when ever and where ever I ride the beast but with the ZX10 I felt like I had to double the limit before I started having "fun".
The ZX14 is a tool pretty much. Long haul touring/riding and surprisingly fun considering what it is. It's also primarily my missus' bike too.
Currently saving for a super charger as have been bitten by the drag racing buzz.
DMTD; you hold exactly the same attitude as I do
I too found that on the fours, I had to be doing a zillion kph to have fun. On the 950SM I have so much more fun at much saner speeds and there is no comparison when it comes to handling: the KTM rocks!
Too many people are obsessed with peak power and the lies told about 'dry weight'. They should just go out and do some back to back road tests.
That said, I like being 'different'. We aint there to win world champs and half the battle is just being different to the run of the mill mass production stuff
